This is A Disability Activist’s Journey through the Adult Entertainment Industry: William Takahashi’s story. The video explores how he got involved in the industry, his professional relationships, and why he and others believe the disabled should have an active role in the Adult Entertainment Industry. This video includes interviews with Stacey Swimme Co-Founder of Desiree Alliance and with Victoria Disability and Sex Worker’s Rights Activist The full DVD will be available at the end of June from www.ap-educators.com .

My name is William Takahashi. I am a college grad with a background in graphic arts, media, and social work. I am disabled. My disability is Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a physical disability caused by a permanent brain injury that occurs before, during, or shortly after birth. The effect of Cerebral Palsy, or CP, is characterized by lack of muscle control and body movement. I use a Hot power wheelchair to get around.

I decided to enter the adult content design world 3 years ago because I saw a real need for education, understanding, and integration of the disabled into the entertainment industry. Its unfortunate that sex and disability are more often seen as a medical or academic research topic, but not seen has erotic:-) I strongly oppose organizations for the disabled who will not deal with sexuality issues. These groups NEED to acknowledge that disabled adults, including myself, do or have paid for sex at some time in their life. I enjoy creating erotic art,and am developing my skills has a web designer. I also enjoy being in front of a camera, I have worked with two photographers, one female and one male, to do wheelchair art.

How would your co-workers describe you?

My employees and co-workers would describe me as patient, organized, and task oriented. I seem to get along best with other business people. I enjoy challenges, and have a talent to find and implement creative solutions to problems. My life experience has forced me to do a lot of successful problem solving.

What is your most impressive work or school achievement?

After graduating from University of Illinois I started my own business. This move made me develop my management and supervising skills. Throughout the years I have learned the functions of business on my own.

Why are you successful in business?

I am successful because I am motivated and have a strong desire to succeed in life and in business. I am very persuasive and have a talent for getting people to embrace my goals.

Describe a major event or issue that has affected your life?

I believe that my disability, and the fact that I did not have a lot of parental involvement in my life, has made me a stronger and more independent person. From an early age, I learned how to find realistic solutions to problems that confronted me. Despite the fact that I have cerebral palsy, which limits my mobility to some degree, I have lived a life like many others. I attended University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and in my time there, successfully completed all of my course work and started my own business. While many people would look at me as simply disabled, I know that this obstacle has only made me stronger as a person.

List your last three jobs and salary history?

Currently, I own a small web-design e-commerce company. I started my company while I was finishing my Bachelors degree at the University of Illinois. To further enhance my skills, I have also received my certification as a Master CIW Web Site Designer.

In developing the company, I created and routinely updated the company web site. To do this I acquired skills in programming languages including Flash 8, XML, JAVA, JAVASCRIPT, CGI, and Windows XP operating system. I also have skills in using graphic design programs, including Adobe Photoshop, Pagemaker, and CorelDraw. I have designed web sites and ads to appeal to a wide spectrum of viewers, implementing both cutting-edge eroticism and traditional mainstream values. My knowledge and skill set is strongest in the world of eroticism.

Important to any successful business person, I have also developed modern management skills. I have hired a company marketing team, and supervised them in their execution of marketing strategies. By building and maintaining strong client relationships, I have seen my company develop. I have set an operating budget for business and I monitor income and expenses. I am small, but growing. I do travel some when clients and supporters help with expenses. I hope my income will increase to a level where assistance isn't needed.

Why do you believe you could ultimately be The Apprentice?

I should be the next Apprentice because I have good business skills, highly developed survivor skills and a strong will to overcome any obstacle. As a business professional with a disability, I can bring an important perspective of inclusion to both the show and a job that might follow it. Ultimately, the position of an apprentice is one of a student, and I am seeking an opportunity to develop my skills and learn from the experts of the business world; The Apprentice would be the best learning experience to have.

In addition to my entrepreneurial experience, I have also been involved in several programs such as a three-month internship in the Communications Department at the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. Under the supervision of a senior PR/Advertising Specialist, I designed product and service promotional pieces, updated a resource manual and redesigned its cover, and did web site content research. While I am not visually impaired myself, I developed an understanding of the issues surrounding accessible media.
