  • Bio

Willie French Lowery is a Lumbee Indian from Robeson County, North Carolina and has over forty years of experience as a professional singer, songwriter and guitarist. He has performed with artists such as Floyd Westerman, Ulali, The Allman Brothers, and Clyde McPhatter, and has recorded with several musical groups including "Plant and See" (White Whale Records) and "Lumbee" (Radnor Records). With "Lumbee," Lowery's single "Streets of Gold" reached #1 in East coast markets. He has published over 500 songs which have been recorded by numerous gospel, rock, country and R&B artists. He composed the original songs for Strike At the Wind!, an outdoor drama now in its 25th year that tells the story of Lumbee hero Henry Berry Lowery. Willie Lowery's solo albums include "Proud to be a Lumbee," "A Tribute to Old Main," and "Thunder Beings of Light," all of which he recorded as educational tributes to his history and culture. His tribute to Henry Berry, "Henry Berry Lowery is My Hero," was performed by the North Carolina Symphony in 1986 and 1987, under the direction of Jackson Parkhurst. He has performed in public schools in Robeson County and throughout North Carolina, and he has been named "Tarheel of the Week" for his work with Indian youth and his contributions to North Carolina history. Currently he is living in Cambridge, MA where he plays live, writes songs and plays, and holds a fellowship at the Peabody Museum at Harvard University. Willie has three sons: Corey Lowery, formerly of Stuck Mojo, Stereomud, and now of Dark New Day; Clint Lowery, formerly of Sevendust and now of Dark New Day, and Dustin Lowery, formerly of Ether Seeds and Dows Lane, and now working on a new project. He is very proud of them.

Thanks for adding me. MySpace has opened an amazing, unexplored world of music, film, compassion and spirit filled with talented artists, activists and networks for just causes.

Each new discovery of music from thousands of blues, folk, country, R&B, world music, etc. and from activists informing & fighting for children, peace, freedom, human rights, a healthy earth, breathable air, clear water, safe havens, mutual respect and on and on - have all helped to inspire and sustain me. I had to reenter the job hunt last summer as someone over 50 years old - followed by a successful cancer surgery with months of recovery ahead.

Thank you again for sharing your artistry and activism with me. You have kept hope alive for me. Keep the faith; keep making music, art and fighting the good fight!

    Best,

    Bob
