"The surprise of the night was dynamic duo Winchester Warm. Jon Pearce (Poorfolk/Soiree) on acoustic guitar/vocals and Matt Godin on drums/vocals was all this band needed to produce a tight, full-band sound. Having only heard a couple songs online within minutes I was smitten by their tandem vocals and emotive (but not mushy) lyrical sensibilities..." Amanda Putz - CBC Radio 3
"From the heart of Ottawa's rockers Poorfolk comes Winchester Warm. With only Jon Pearce on acoustic guitar and vocals and drummer Matt Godin on vocals as well, they offer a rich, tight, and surprisingly full live sound for only two people! Lovely lyrics and lively melodies like these don't need more than the perfect pair!" CBC Radio 2
The name Winchester rifle is frequently used to describe any of the lever-action rifles manufactured in America by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in the latter half of the 19th Century, although it is usually in reference to the Winchester Model 1873 or the Winchester Model 1894.
Winchester rifles were amongst the earliest repeating rifles, and as such the Winchester name has become synonymous with lever-action firearms. The gun is colloquially known as "The Gun that Won the West" for its immense popularity at that time, as well as its use in fictional Westerns.
Members of local rock band Poorfolk Jonathan Pearce and Matthew Godin decided one day to work on quieter, intimate songs that no longer fit into the rock n roll repertoire. Consisting of an acoustic guitar, drums, a pair of vocal chords and no technological trickery, Winchester Warm manage to create a sprawling, lush musical experience. The incessant acoustic guitar work is accented by interesting and off-kilter percussive work and soaring vocal harmonies.
The group's first album was recorded by Jarrett Bartlett at the McLeod-Stewarton United Church in centretown Ottawa and is scheduled for release in Autumn 2009.
