It was in a small bathroom backstage at the Wildhorse Canyon camp in Oregon that I saw a small 'Out Of Order' sign hanging over a water heater. I paused momentarily and considered the handmade sign. At the time, it may have been more suitable to hang that same sign over the friendship between me and Aaron. Moments of tension, unspoken words and the newfound challenges of life after college and in a new city had built their way into a breakdown of sorts. Just like water in a clogged pipe builds up and then bursts from the tension, so were the words in our heads. But friendships and water heaters differ in one very important way. Fix a broken down water heater and it will only ever be as good as it was originally. Take the time to fix a broken down friendship and it will become even stronger than it was before.
Shortly after I saw this sign, I sat down in an empty theatre room and wrote the entire song "Out Of Order" in about an hour. Almost on queue, after I had just barely finished the song, Aaron walked in unexpectedly to where I was writing. We were the only ones in the large room, but the tension of unspoken words filled the space tightly. The scene played out almost like a movie scene. Except movie scenes don't happen this perfectly. I played him the song and we then spent the next two hours having one of the most redemptive conversations I have ever had. We said everything we had let build up for the past months and spoke not with disdain but with love to each other. That day we went from "out of order, growing colder" to "out of order, growing closer". After our conversation I changed the last chorus to reflect that change. We were broken down, but we were stronger.
This song became a unifying theme for us. The songs on this album reflect that theme. We wanted to explore relationship. Romance, but not just romance. The give and take, the eventuality of love, the letting go, the breaking down, the growing closer and the tensions in between. For us, the inspiring part of Out Of Order is not the break down, but finding the rebuild in the midst of the disorder. Sure we might be out of order, but what happens next?
This album is our first step as a band. The second step won't be the same as the first step, but the same set of feet will be making it. We look forward to taking many steps as we pursue the music in our hearts given to us by a mystery that we will never solve. Hope you can join us along the way.
