   About Windsor Bellephone

Windsor Bellephone (born Brian Allen Carroll in Cambridge, England, Aug. 4., 1979) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Montgomery, Alabama. Bellephone’s music is known for its playful and adventurous Beatle-esque production, virtuoso keyboard sequencing, skittering drum machines, and unorthodox instrumentation.

Windsor Bellephone (an amalgam of Winsor McCay and Bellerophon) started composing music as a teen after being kicked out of his high school marching band for playing too loud. In 1999, Bellephone was exposed to independent music while living in Memphis and began recording hundreds of demo songs.

Bellephone released his first album, ‘The Pilot EP’, in 2001, an eclectic odyssey through a variety of pop styles, including chamber, electro, and Blur-influenced brit. Songs were punctuated with a variety of unusual touches such as the harpsichord, marimba, droning synths, cat meows, and samples of Garisson Keilor reciting a Rudyard Kipling poem.

Next, Bellephone recorded the fuzzy debut LP, ‘Red Devil’, which featured the embodiment of the Windsor Bellephone aesthetic in the local hit “Get Back My Shine”, a tropical LSD trip slathered with digital distortion, maniacal synth melodies, beach boys-style harmonies, drum and bass beats, and a munchkin-like sample from Peter Jackson’s “Dead Alive.” Critics called ‘Red Devil’ a “kaliedoscopic smorgasboard” and a “roller coaster ride through a nightmarish candy land”.

Following the positive press and stunned reception from the locals, word of mouth spread and Bellephone soon began to gain the attention of other area acts. He performed and recorded with math-rock band Weak Music for Thomas, Three Happenin Guys, and Will Garrison of Minneapolis folk orchestra Spirits of the Red City.

Bellephone soon found his way to psychedelic mecca Philadelphia, and started his own mail-order label to release his next two albums. The first was a high-concept political fantasy called ‘The Insect Play’.

Immense in its scope, ‘The Insect Play’ alienated many fans expecting another fun-loving free for all, but won Bellephone a slew of new listeners in Philadelphia, who found its gooey, pensive noise-scapes to be the perfect soundtrack for a night of drug-induced introspection. Soon, ballad “The Man Who Pulls the Switch” began to win awards on Garageband.com for programming and originality, and won track of the week in both Indie Rock and Pop categories. An instrumental disc coupled with the album called ‘CUP - Virgin LP’ led Bellephone to score several video games for Merit Entertainment.

Bellephone returned to school, studying animation, and released another album, ‘Poppy Seed’ in 2008 (mastered by Jeff Zeigler of arc in round). ‘Poppy Seed’ was a quizzical, yet slickly commercial break-up album, full of nods to classic rock bands like T.Rex and the Zombies. The album’s breakout singles were “Break My Record”, a harmonious nod to soulful 60s R&B that climaxes into a hair-raising surf-tinged dirge, and “Place is a Puzzle”, a chillingly eerie synth-pop lament.

Currently, Bellephone is touring in promotion of a self-released tribute album to singer Roy Orbison and is readying the release of a blistering return to the hyperactivity of his early releases with an LP called ‘Vajra’. Plans are also underway to release deluxe editions of all previous albums with bonus discs of b-sides.
