Bijan came across an advertisement for Youth 08 Malaysia’s Battle of the Bands and was inspired to win the competition. So Bijan decided to form a project band.
He invited Faiz; whom he bummed into half a year ago at Zouk KL. Faiz was performing with Ask Me Again; a post-modern rock band from Subang Jaya and Bijan was doing the sound for Flow; an alternative rock, reggae and rock band from Kelana Jaya.Faiz agreed.
At the same time, Bijan gathered a collective of music students; Tam on Lead Guitars, Kartina Keyboards, Chewan on bass, Anul on drums, Ayid on alto sax., Ketapang (also with Funky Doryz) on tenor sax., and Khairul on trumpet and named it after the legacy he had created 4 years ago; 40 Winks. And they all agreed.
They practiced as a unit for 2 weeks covering Reel Big Fish and Mighty Mighty Bosstones and won the Battle of the Bands.o yeah!
Inspired by the victory, they knew the chemistry they’ve created earlier is meant to last. Hence, they’ve decided to stay as a band.
The band came up with 5 original songs, mostly composed by Bijan, Tam, Ketapang and Chewan and arranged and rearranged by all of the band members.
The upcoming days seems bright for the band. They started getting radio and magazine interviews, performing at music gigs and jazz clubs around Kuala Lumpur. They’ve also challenged themselves into Global Battle of the Bands but unfortunately, it wasn’t their arena to conquer.
Sometime in March, the band recruited Panjang to replace Khairul on trumpet but not so long after that, Khairul returned.
The band recorded their demo/extended play at Studio Anggerik, Shah Alam. The feedback from the masses was extremely encouraging.
Before they finalize the unit, the band also recruited Aidilie on Trombone to add the low energy into the horn sections and thus, the new era of 40 Winks was born.
Phew! try to repeat that in one monotonous breath.
