The city of Winnemucca, Nevada is located in the very center of Northern Nevada on Interstate 80, approximately 167 miles Northeast of Reno. It is the only town in Nevada named after a Native American. Chief Winnemucca was a famous Northern Paiute Indian Chief and father to Sarah Winnemucca.
Most of the people that live in this community make their living from the land, either in mining or in other agricultural pursuits. The city is a cultural crossroads. There are a large number of Basque people that practice their customs on a daily basis. There is also a very active Hispanic community, not to mention the presence of the Northern Pauite and Western Shoshone tribes of Native Americans.
Like much of rural Nevada, Winnemucca is full of outdoor recreational opportunities. There is also a very fun filled community calendar that plays host to several exciting events including: the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo, the Shooting the West Photography Symposium, Run-A-Mucca Motorcycle Rally, Winnemucca Basque Festival, the Winnemucca Mule Show and Races, 50s Fever, and the Try-County Fair!
