"The New Kings of Tampa"
After what would go on to become one of the greatest "Little Friday's" of my life last night, I've decided to reflect upon some of the events leading up to this not so new phenomena as well giving some major props to the BEST band in Tampa right now. I have grown quite accustomed to the idea of starting every weekend on Thursday night. It makes too much sense for me not to. We could all use an extra day to kick back and act stupid amongst our friends. Usually, I'll throw Guitar Hero on and invite some friends over. Occasionally, a show will pop up and I'll check it out. The latter was the case this past "Little Friday". Win Win Winter has accomplished a lot in a little over half a year, acquiring opening slots for Maritime and Travis Morrison, as well as garnering stage time at the Fest, Anti-Pop and Bang (three of Florida's most recognized music festivals). But a conversation I had with a friend of mine, who incidentally, happens to be one the most influencial and important presences in Tampa's music scene, made me see things from a whole new light. Is the torch being passed? The past two years have seen an amazing rebirth for local music in the bay area. In my opinion, the Candy Bars were one of the greatest acts to grace our city at one point or another. But where the hell have they gone? I'm sure someone knows, and I'm sure they could care less what I think, but I fucking miss them. In their stead some bands I've grown quite fond of in the local scene over the past year and a half include Auto!Automatic!!'s explosive live shows, the haunting pressence of prog-rock duo GreyMarket, and the infectious power pop-punk sound of Select Start. That being said, for my money Win Win Winter is the best local act going right now, and they are just getting started. Last night at New World was amazing, and they were playing for a half-filled room if that in a small (albeit legendary) venue.
