'TV JUNKIE' AWARDED SPECIAL JURY PRIZE: DOCUMENTARY @ SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
and other film festival news...
Music supervisor, WISHFM aka Wade Randolph Hampton, celebrates with the crew for his first Sundance Award winning film!
The Special Jury Prize for a Documentary was announced last night at the closing ceremony for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Produced by Dallas based Deep Ellum Films, 'TV Junkie' chronicles a man obsessed with filming his life of addiction, turmoil, and surprising success - eventually landing a gig as a national broadcaster for Inside Edition.
WISHFM spearheaded a diverse, if not eery soundtrack that includes The Jackson 5, Spiritualized, Explosions in the Sky and Steve Earle, as well as, his own original music.
Powerhouse film reps at the ICM Agency have secured a sale for non-North American rights for the film and expect to release the details of all worldwide deals in the next week.
Across the board, Mr. Hampton saw much success during this year's festival while wearing as many hats as any participant in Park City. As Production Director for the wildly successful ChefDance, he and festival owners, Kenny Griswold and Mimi Kim, hosted 10 nights of the world's most in-demand celebrity chefs, including Food Network's Tyler Florence, Iron Chef's Ming Tsai and Todd English, along with the James Beard Award winning Todd Campbell. Highlights included an unplanned and super-rare reunion of The Police and an ultra-exclusive dinner for Jennifer Anniston, in celebration of her self-produced film, 'Friends with Money' (a true Sundance darling). ChefDance is sponsored by Marshall Field's, Citigroup and Mercedes Benz and is planned to debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, next year.
As if that wasn't enough, WISHFM's crew at the legendary Harry O's venue on Main Street co-produced boutique Sundance concerts for Ben Folds, Liz Phair, DJ Tommie Sunshine, Damian Marley, Counting Crows, and a little quartet from the Bay area named, Metallica.
Simply epic.
WISHFM played a blazing 4 hour DJ set for the Boost Mobile hiphop extravaganza, and with Tommie Sunshine at the action sports video, X-Dance Awards. He was also the featured DJ at the San Francisco Film Commission's 'Location:SF' event and his own electro-hoedown, Vicious Circle, once again with glam DJ/terrorist/luminary, Tommie Sunshine.
Book your tickets now - 2007 Sundance is the new black.
The guestlist awaits you.
NEWS FLASH!!____December 12, 2005
'TV JUNKIE' - named OFFICIAL 2006 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL Selection.
WISHFM is back with another Sundance killer after being given the nod as the Music Supervisor for the Deep Ellum Films project. He is currently producing original music for the movie, as well. Early word has it that the film is a true Sundance contender and premiers on opening Saturday night, January 21st at 8:30pm in Park City.
RECENT NEWS____October 5, 2005
WishFM and legendary L.A. impresario King Solomon have just finished producing THE DOMINO PROJECT, an original song entitled "Am I Really That Bad?". The set of big-floor progressive killers will be released worldwide in the next month to coincide with the theater run of New Line Cinema's blockbuster 'DOMINO', in which a mix of the song is featured in both opening and closing sequences of the movie. The music contains the real vocals of Domino herself, and features additional production and remixes from Datguy and the Verdugo Brothers. The film is based on the true story of Domino Harvey, a privileged Hollywood Ford model, who gives up the glamorous life of fashion to become one of L.A.'s top bounty hunters. Released on October 14th, the movie stars Keira Knightly, Mickey Rourke, Christopher Walken, Mena Suvari, Lucy Liu and Macy Gray, amongst others.
Hold on to your seats for another dramatic twist in the WishFM plot.
WISHFM - THE BIOGRAPHY
Electronic funk revolutionary, Wade Randolph Hampton, aka DJ WishFM, aka W, aka Redheadedstepchild, amongst various other stealth monikers, has always preferred exploring the outer perimeters of dance music. He personifies the term 'jack of all trades'... putting him in a class by himself as he regularly plays three different styles in a single weekend, digging deep into a collection of over 10,000 tracks. Unafraid, WishFM claims no genre affiliations and avoids the DJ cliques.
His army of one is best described by the critics...
URB Magazine... "The sound of W cannot be contained in a little box. Chilled out and pilled out, Redheadedstepchild is worth your attention."
The U.K.'s MUZIK Magazine checks his D&B set..."WishFM showcases a laidback jazzstep sound which references to LTJ Bukem and Roni Size yet is defiantly American."
L.A.'s Fix Magazine says, "As Aphex Twin, Autechre and the old heroes of experimentation begin to disappoint and dwindle, W's new album is as refreshing as it is innovative." "It is very apparent that he has been successful at realizing a dream."
Indeed, when uber-group Radiohead needs a DJ to finish off the night at their epic Hollywood Bowl soirees, they call just one person... WishFM.
And, they've done exactly that on the last three world tours.
Mr. Hampton has spent 20 years traveling the globe in his pursuit of absolute sonic bliss, generally arriving just ahead of the next big thing. And his timing is deafening. Dallas in ‘84. Chicago in '88. Los Angeles in '91. San Francisco in '92. At its early ‘90s peak, his legendary annual Los Angeles electronic showcase, CIRCA, set attendance records and production standards for the entire American dance scene. He has enjoyed headlining status at the biggest annual festivals in this hemisphere, including the national massive Cyberfest, San Francisco's Planet New Year, L.A.’s Together As One and Monster Massive, ACA World Music Festival in Acapulco and the illustrious Ultra in Miami. His fantastic voyage has been well documented in books, "Generation Ecstasy" by Simon Reynolds, as well as, "The Book Of E" and "Rave America" both by Mirielle Silcott. He's been featured in an unbelievable 19 TV/film documentaries, including MTV’s “True Life series, CBS’ “48 Hours, and the late Peter Jennings heralded 'Ecstasy Rising', cementing his rep as one of the true historians of American dance music.
His relationships with underground luminaries are endless... from Timothy Leary (DJ'ed at his funeral) to Traci Lords (her DJ coach & recent producer) and Derrick Carter (taught Wade how to DJ better). Then there's Perry Farrell (deadly Sundance DJ duo) and of course, Paul Oakenfold (gets drunk while Paul DJ's)... even Trainspotting's Irvine Welsh who chose to crash Wade's 30th surprise birthday party with a quite merry pack of pranksters. In the early days, he was the tirelessly rowdy manager/DJ/roommate of the original "royal family of American electronic", San Francisco's Hardkiss Music, as they stormed the country with their unique brand of affordable chaos. This uncanny abililty to attract electronic co-conspirators has consistently added fuel to the fodder. Wade has chosen to share this wealth and unexplainable good fortune in his mission to spread the electronic gospel, producing and performing at literally hundreds of shows across the United States, Mexico and Canada. While he prefers the rush of the live environment, Mr. Hampton has split his time with the studio to produce five highly celebrated compilation CDs (WishFM '96.1', WishFM '97.1', WishFM '98.1', W 'Jet Set', 'GROOVE' Soundtrack - WishFM mix). He has also produced two very original artist albums (W 'Redheadedstepchild', W 'Stepheadedredchild') for San Francisco’s groundbreaking Zoe Magik label. On his own labels, Domestic Recordings and La Belle Epoque Musique, he released debut albums from himself, along with American dance music stalwarts Mark Farina, Symbiosis and Westside Chemical. Spend one day with him and it becomes very clear... the man rarely sits still.
Mainstream publication Entertainment Weekly explains "WishFM adds another splendid piece of trance-cum-disco to the canon, crowning the genre as the new disco."
Underground rag, XLR8R Magazine chimes in, "W is firmly in the primer category as posterity knocks at the door of West Coast electronic. More than worth it."
WADE LOVES FILM AND TV... well, at least the ads, anyways. In 1997, he created the soundtrack to the celebrated Tony Kaye advertising campaign for Mercedes Benz A Class automobiles. In 1999, his efforts were rewarded with a BAMMY nomination by the California Music Awards in the category of ‘Outstanding Electronic Artist’. In 2000, Wade made his acting debut, playing himself in Sony Pictures Classics film “Groove, while casting his old friend John Digweed as the marquis DJ superstar. As music supervisor for the motion picture, he produced the soundtrack for Kinetic/Warner Brothers, selling over 100,000 copies in 24 different countries. “Groove was nominated for ’Best Film Under $500,000’ at the 2001 IFC Independent Film Awards. In 2002, he put the finishing touches on his contribution for the 'Requiem For A Dream' remix album for Darren Aronofsky’s Oscar winning film, which was released on Thrive/Sony/RED Records. His ten day event at the annual Sundance Film Festival, including a highly successful partnership with Giant L.A., has continued to break new ground for dance music in the movie industry. Wade's screenplay, 'Louder Than Words' (a mid-80's new wave crime story) is now on the shopping block in L.A.
BAM Magazine touts, "You may not know Wade Randolph Hampton by name, but the 31 year old San Francisco resident is making great progress in his bid for world domination."
AND, HE STILL HAS A LIFE
At the moment, he's teaching his son 9 year old son Holmes how to MC and play good basketball while his girlfriend finishes law school in Dallas. His great dane, named Blue can eat any shoe you put in front of him in about 5 minutes. Wade eats Sushi at Nobu every two weeks or loses his temper in fit a raw fish envy. He's completely addicted to 'Pimp My Ride' which is the only show he watches on MTV, although he really doesn't care too much for American cars... especially custom ones. He CLAIMS that he can still drink all of you motherfuckers under the table - and I wouldn't doubt it. Especially if there's high grade tequila involved, so better not try that one. His father can be blamed for this.
CURRENTLY... WishFM is recording a new hiphop remix of 'Brick House' by The Commodores for Motown Records and his son has memorized every single word to the 70's classic (how cute). The new downtempo project with partner in crime, Robbie Hardkiss, under the artist name - Bonnie Doon, is the next LP in the collection. And, it's a real doozer... set to explode in 2006.
Perhaps New York's Village Voice put it most simply, as they descibed his skills... "truly stellar, cutting edge DJing."
WishFM can move any crowd and he's coming to your town.
Sundance Film Festival is coming up. All my dealings with Park City venues reminded me of many awesome Wishfm mixes. Hope life is treating you well. =)
Are you coming to our party with Uberzone this saturday? It's free before 10 at lizard lounge and we're giving away our new t-shirts! :) hit us back and we'll get you a drink." love/breaks. -Chris and Justin
So they are building a new W fun center on Hollywood and Vine, they are commissioning a bronze statue in your honor for the front lobby. Kinda like Bob's Big Boy, but laying down with a cocktail in your outstretched hand. Does that mean you are coming out here and taking over? Would be a wise career move, plus my liver misses you.
