Within the Woods is a stark, modern day Horror film written, directed and filmed by Luke Massey. It’s a classic low budget 70's horror film, think "Evil Dead" meets "Night of the Living Dead" with the production values of Robert Rodriguez's debut "El Mariachi" or Peter Jackson’s “Bad Taste". This is not a glamorous Hollywood studio flick, but a visceral, plot driven horror shot using novel filming, lighting and makeup effects techniques to tell the story of a broken family struggling to keep things together while facing real terror.
The film is set a few days from now, when a mutated strain of avian influenza is about to affect two groups of young adults. Featuring a cast and crew from a variety of backgrounds and filmed entirely in the West Midlands.
The story takes place over 24 hours and begins with a wild animal smuggler dropping a crate from the back of his van. The crate has a bird brought in from the Far East which is infected with a mutated strain of H5N1 and passes on the disease when two random strangers come across it later in the day. Also on the same day two groups of young adults on separate story arcs heading into an isolated area of woodlands in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside. The first group is four former foster children heading back to the cabin they used to stay in when they were children and hoping to repair their broken family ties. The second group are eco protestors looking to try and stop the proposed redevelopment of the same woodlands by a building company. As the night progresses they encounter the first victims and start the fight for their lives.
