I started off with Ben Folds, simply because at first I sincerely desired to imitate his seemingly weightless and feather-like middle-voice. But in retrospect I find that that was a REALLY bad idea because Ben Folds's vocal style turned out to be really unconventional and untraditional, and without training, it was immensely easy for me to blow out my voice. I remember multiple occasions in which I literally blew out my falsetto, and there was a point at which I believed I could no longer sing. So you want to be careful and start off with simple stuff, that's for sure. I'd love to talk with you more about singing, but I have so much homework on my chest right now it's ridiculous. I'll try to get in touch with you (preferably IM; what's your IM?) as soon as I can and when I'm free, so I can focus and help you out thoroughly. Learning to sing is one of the most amazing experiences a human can ever go through, I think. Until I help you out, be nice to your voice and avoid over-singing. Be sure to sing regularly.
