Wykonuje wyłącznie własne kompozycje autorstwa pianisty Piotra Karola Sawickiego oraz ukraińskiego trębacza Cata Donskoja.

Repertuar Warszawa Kyiv Express obejmuje obecnie 14 utworów zaaranżowanych w nietypowych formach i rytmach. Znakiem rozpoznawczym są także rozbudowane kontrapunkty, skale i harmonia modalna oraz nieregularne metra.

Po raz pierwszy spotkali się w Big Bandzie Jazz Radia w klubie Akwarium.
Jednak dopiero dziesięć lat później postanowili zrealizować swoje marzenie i utworzyli zespół Warszawa Kyiv Express.
Piotrowi Karolowi Sawickiemu drzwi do folkloru otworzyła muzyka Jana Johanssona, szwedzkiego pianisty. Z jego muzyką zetknął się już w dzieciństwie dzięki swojej szwedzkiej babci.
Muzyka tego wybitnego pianisty uświadomiła mu, że folk w jazzowym wydaniu może być piękny, subtelny i wyrafinowany.
Cat Donskoj swoje muzyczne inspiracje czerpie z ukraińskich stepów, z ich bezkresną przestrzenią i niezwykłym kolorytem.
Średniowieczną pieśń ludową, kołysankę „Oj tam czumak”, śpiewała mu babcia.
Zespół planuje teraz ogranie repertuaru na koncertach i nagranie płyty.

About Music:
Warszawa Kyiv Express is influenced by traditional folk from middle-eastern Europe.
Within their music you can hear: kujawiak, polonaise, highlander songs, kolomyjka, white singing, and also Caucasus lezginka.
The repertoire now consists of fourteen pieces, uniquely arranged in form and rhythm. The trademark of these pieces is in the development of counterpoints, scales, modal harmony and uncommon time signatures

The composers of Warszawa Kyiv Express have in common an interest in their own cultures and openness for inspiration from other traditions
They met for the first time at the Big Band of the Jazz Radio in the legendary Aquarium Club. But it took not 10 years to fulfill their dream and create their own band.
Piotr Karol Sawicki opened himself to folk music through the works of Jan Johansson, a Swedish pianist. Sawicki listened to Johansson 's music, with the encouragement of his Swedish grandmother. Music of this extraordinary Swedish pianist made him realize, that folk music can be beautiful, sophisticated, when arranged in a jazz way.
Cat Donskoj is inspired by the Ukrainian steppe, and their unlimited space and unusual colors.
The medieval folk lullaby „Oj tam czumak”, was sung to him by his grandmother.
The band is planning to record an album and promote it on tour.

Zur Band:
Was die Warszawa Kyiv Express Band zu bieten hat, stammt durchweg von ihren
beiden Gründern, dem polnischen Pianisten, Komponisten und Arrangeur Piotr
Karol Sawicki und dem in Polen lebenden ukrainischen Jazztrompeter,
Komponisten und Arrangeur Cat Donskoj.
Bei sämtlichen Bandmitgliedern handelt es sich um gestandene und
hervorragend aufeinander eingespielte Jazzmen, die ihren Szeneneinstand
bereits vor vielen Jahren gegeben haben.
Ihnen allen kommt es nicht allein
darauf an, ihrem Instrument das Höchste abzuringen, vielmehr wollen sie
auch beim Hörer ein Maximum an Gefühlen auslösen.
Zur musikalischen Profil der Warszawa Kyiv Express Band:
Die Jazzband hat sich völlig dem ETNO JAZZ verschrieben, bringt demnach
zwar ihre ureigensten Kompositionen, die jedoch ihre deutlichen Impulse aus
der polnischen und ukrainischen Folklore empfangen.
Genauso wenig
verleugnen will sie Anregungen aus anderen Kulturen und Gattungen. Kurzum,
sie besinnt sich auf die ostmitteleuropäische Musiktradition.
In spannender Weise versteht es die Warszawa Kyiv Express Band diese
Musiktradition mit ihren originären Jazzklängen zu verschmelzen und ein
Klima zu erzeugen, in dem das Mit- und Nebeneinander der Kulturen, die
gegenseitigen Beeinflussungen von polnischer und ukrainischer Kultur
überzeugend zum Tragen kommen.
Damit öffnet sich auch für das Publikum der
Blick zurück zu den eigenen Wurzeln, zur eigenen Identität.
So klingen in ihren Kompositionen durchaus schon mal Kujawiak- oder
Polonaise-Rhythmen an, glaubt man den Gesang der polnischen Goralen oder
eine ukrainische Kolomyjka herauszuhören, um schließlich vom Gesang der
Donkosaken oder einer feurigen Lesginka aus dem Kaukasus überrascht zu
werden.
Momentan umfasst das Band-Repertoire etwa 20 in untypischen Formen und
Rhythmen arrangierte Werke.
Und gerade diese orignelle, ausdrucksstarke Gegenüber- und Zusammenstellung
von Rhythmen, Harmonien, Tonstufen und Volksmusikmotiven, die springenden
Tempi und das durchdachte, höchste präzise Arrangement sind für den
unverwechselbaren, so überaus neuartig frischen Sound, den ganzen Reiz
dieser Musikertruppe ausschlaggebend.
Werdegang:
Was die Komponisten der Warszawa Kyiv Express Band verbindet, ist ihr
Interesse an der eigenen Kultur, zugleich aber auch ihre Aufgeschlossenheit
gegenüber Anregungen aus anderen Traditionen.
Erstmals begegnet sind sich
Sawicki und Donskoj in der Big Band von Jazz Radio im Warschauer Kult-Club
"Aquarium". Allerdings mussten noch zehn Jahre vergehen, ehe sie sich dazu
durchgerungen hatten, ihren Traum von der Gründung ihrer eigenen Band zu
verwirklichen.
Für Piotr Karol Sawicki wurde die musikalische Herangehensweise des
schwedischen Jazzpianisten Jan Johansson zum Schlüsselerlebnis, das ihm die
Augen für Folk öffnete. Dessen Melodien kannte er bereits aus seiner
eigenen Kindheit, hatte sie ihm doch schon seine schwedische Großmutter
beigebracht. Jedenfalls machte ihm Johansson bewusst, dass verjazzte
Volksmusik eine ganz neue Dimension zu erreichen, ihre ganze Zartheit und
Rafinesse offen zu legen vermag.
Und wenn Cat Donskoj zur Trompete greift, glaubt man, er empfange seine
Anregungen direkt aus der unendlichen Weite der ukrainischen Steppe mit all
ihren Farbnuancen. Übrigens, das uralte Volkslied "Oj tam tschumak" hat ihm
schon seine Oma vorgesungen.
