  • Bio

Tearing through the speakers like a swamp monster summoned from some dark cosmic morass, Texas riffmasters Wo Fat unapologetically blast out a southern fried, blues-infused version of Psychedelic Doom, conjuring up visions of hoodoo shacks, prowling undead, hell hounds at the crossroads, Lovecraftian cultists and ghouls, and worlds beyond where the riff reigns almighty. Wo Fat rose from the deep and began their psychedelic quest circa 2003 when guitarist Kent Stump formed the band with drummer Michael Walter and bassist Tim Wilson. Their goal was to create a music that is crushingly heavy, but that stays within the paradigm forged by Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top and the other 70's greats. A music that allows for improvisational freedom, extensive jamming and interplay between the three members yet that, at the same time, allows them to crank out monolithic, fuzzed out, downtuned riffs, all the while staying true to the haunting blues that wail and moan deep within their souls. Their first album, "The Gathering Dark," was released in 2007 and is a 70 minute expedition into a murky jungle of fuzz. It's got straight ahead Orange Goblin style rockers like "The Wolf" and "Company Man," opium-haze enveloped, dusty, backwoods delta trips like the title track and "Risin' River," and the sprawling bayou instrumental "Runnin' the Voodoo Down" (is that a Miles Davis reference?). "Psychedelonaut" was released in 2009 on Brainticket Records(Las Cruces, Blood of the Sun, Concept of God, Iron Man), the label founded by John Perez of the doom metal legends Solitude Aeturnus. This album continues further down the doomy blues road, but takes it further, to the nether regions of psychedelic space doom. It's chock full of torrents of massively overdriven riffs and plenty of Hendrixy acid guitar freakouts with mammoth slabs of Sleep-like doom like "Psychedeloanut," the Sabbathy "Enter the Riffian" and the southern tinged "Slow Blade." Even an old Mississippi Fred McDowell tune "Shake Em On Down" is blasted into the weedian stratosphere. They space out and trip their way to the end with the epic Pink Floyd-ish instrumental "From the Spheres Beyond." Summer of 2010 saw Wo Fat team up with Germany's Psychedelic Rock connesiuers, Nasoni Records(Colour Haze, Sienna Root, etc.), to release "Psychedelonaut" on double vinyl complete with a previously unreleased bonus track. What's next for these space doomers? The gypsy woman tells of more deep explorations into otherworldy vistas of fuzz and riff. A new album is in the works for winter of 2010
