About me:

EXPATRIATE

a brand new two-woman play with music
about race, friendship, art, and fame.
Written and composed by Lenelle Moîse

Claudie and Alphine are sophisticated and sexy African-American performing artists and longtime sister-friends. Disillusioned by grief, homophobia, and "the black glass ceiling," they flee to Europe to heal and realize their starved American dreams. In Paris, they support themselves singing and dancing on the street and quickly rise to infamy and fortune. But as Claudie and Alphine soon discover, for some Black artists living abroad, stardom comes at a steep price.

EXPATRIATE is an engaging exploration of black womanhood, friendship, sexuality, and freedom, celebrating characters in the spirit of Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, and the Hottentot Venus. With only a JamMan loop machine at their feet, real-life rising stars Lenelle Moïse and Karla Mosley make intricate, haunting and stirring music as they weave the story of singing group Black Venus's rise to fame.

Directed by Tamilla Woodard. Choreography by Nicco Annan. Previews begin July 7. Opening Night July 16. Through August 3.

Special preview tickets available for $26 July 7-15
A limited number of $16 rush tickets are available, one hour in advance on the day of show. Limit one ticket per person.

To purchase tickets, call 212-352-3101 or visit www.cultureproject.org

From one friend of Howard Zinn to another — Thanks for adding me. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they need inspiration too. ¶ This world's evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — in market, government, or elsewhere — believe we're all separate, motivated only by self-interest, greed, fear. They want us to share that belief. They use it to justify themselves, to keep us apart, to shape the world's political & economic systems, perpetuating war & poverty. Their power comes not so much from cabals as from incessant propaganda that we hardly notice, implicit in the background assumptions of television & newspapers. ¶ But you & I have found a better light inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them; we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. Theists and atheists alike, let us sing of our siblinghood. Peace and communication are one subject, not two, and no one can know that subject perfectly until we all do. ¶ The outcome of the ideological struggle is not yet determined, so no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the movement, if you haven't already: get involved in whatever way feels right for you. We must all learn from one another; each of us knows only part of the song. Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal this world. ¶ The flag of the USA, once a symbol of democracy & freedom, has now come to stand for plutocracy, consumerism, imperialism. Small flags are being sold in grocery stores, in anticipation of July 4. I'll wear mine upside down. ¶ Peace, love, hope, revolution. More details on my web page.
