The
Mapuche
are indigenous to Chile. Machi is shaman or shamaness and
Kultrun
is a ceremonial drum.
The Machi "introduces her song" in the Kultrun before stretching the skin to leave her soul in it. She also introduces small sacred objects, like stones, feathers or healing herbs, which make it sound as a rattle.
On the head, they draw different symbols representing the Universe. A cross divides the head into four parts, the vertical line representing the cosmos and the horizontal one the Earth. The intersection is the centre of the World, the sacred place from where the Machi gets in contact with their Gods and ancestors helped by the sound of the Kultrun.
Ulali features
Pura Fe
(Tuscarora),
Soni Moreno
(Mayan, Apache, Yaqui), and
Jennifer Kreisberg
(Tuscarora.)
In 1987, Ulali created an exciting new A Capella sound blending their strong traditional roots with their contemporary musical sensibilities. When they later released their solo album MAHK JCHI, they redefined Native American Music.
Ulali's sound encompasses an array of indigenous music including southeast choral singing (pre-blues and gospel) and pre-Colombian (before the borders) music.
These ladies created an album that seamlessly combined both traditional and contemporary Native American music that has appealed to fans across cultural boundaries. They have built a devoted national and international following attracted to their potent vocal chemistry, unusual harmonies and politically charged songs.
Asani (“rock” in the Cree language), a contemporary Aboriginal women’s a cappella trio from Edmonton, has been captivating audiences with their breathtaking harmonies, their dynamic vocal artistry and their powerful rhythmic style. Carrying with them the traditional influences of First Nations and Metis music accompanied by drums and rattles, their songs resonate with their own blend of traditional vocals infused with the sounds of jazz, folk and blues

DAF A large frame drum used in Iran(Persia) that has a series of interlocking chains hooked inside the shell of the frame.
Throughout Kurdistan in Northwestern Iran, there are many spiritual groups whose practices have revolved around the daf since ancient times. Women and men are segregated in their ceremonies, and in most cases the women's groups use the same spaces as the men at different times. Khalifeh Rahmeh is the women's spiritual leader in Baneh, Kurdistan, Iran, and is the only woman within a large geographic area to construct her own khanegah, or meeting place, exclusively for the use of the women's community
Biography and photo given by Rowan Storm who spent time with Khalifeh Rahmeh
Cheikha Rimitti, the legendary rai music star, was known as "the Mother of Rai", who was born in Tessala, a small village deep in the countryside of western Algeria. Cheikha Rimitti has long been a legend to whom all the younger rai singers have owed their freedom of expression as well as their linguistic and moral rebelliousness, not to mention a significant proportion of their repertoire.
Raï (Arabic: ) is a form of folk music, originated in Oran, Algeria from Bedouin shepherds, mixed with Spanish, French, African-American and Arabic musical forms, which dates back to the 1930's.
Over a 50 year period she recorded over 400 cassettes, 300 singles, 50-something 78rpms and a handful of CDs.
Her final album, 'N'ta Goudami', also made rai history as Cheikha Rimitti, once officially banned in her native Algeria, took the defiant step of recording it at the Boussif studios in the western Algerian seaport of Oran, the city where rai music was born over a century ago.

"THOMAS GOSPEL DERVISHES" myspace - Catherine Braslavsky
"Split the wood, I am there. Turn over a stone, and you will find me"
Text from the Gospel of Thomas in ancient Greek. Music by Joseph Rowe.
Catherine is very much inspired by traditional musics, but her main aim is to compose a music of today. She loves to sing traditional chants (Gregorian, Judeo-Spanish, Arabic and other Mideastern); and she loves to compose, often on ancient poems and prayers, and sometimes on texts written by herself. She loves to explore the energies of different languages (Coptic, ancient Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Latin, Occitan, Spanish...)
Valéria Zeidan and Angélica Leutwiller present a duo of voice and percussion:
Fogueira Das Rosas
Fogueira das Rosas (Rose..s Bonfire) is a concert that brings together the kindness of female voices and the power of the drums, which in a very well elaborated counterpoint gives kindness to the drums and power and strength to the female voices.
The inspiration to this work came from old images found in paintings, sculptures and prints from the pre-Christian period. These images portray women singing and playing all sorts of tambourines as a ritualistic function.
"Our group rises from an experience developed over time, that has seen in dancing, a strong potential, regarding, in the first place, the need for a direct and intuitive communication between participants, then the expressive skill whose story walks together with the history of mankind. Thanks to our acquired experience, we’ve reached the conception of a performance as a moment of exchange and sharing, in which elements of dance, music and chants condition and complete each other being an harmonic and undividable trio.
The common goal is so discovered in the primordial joy of group movement, in the sense of a collective participation, in the creative possibility of a moment of gathering. "

synthesizers and acoustic instruments such as fiddle, accordion, darboukas, txalapartas, cellos, and guitar.
Ialma is a group of 5 young women settled in Brussels. These singers have been gathering traditional songs of their ancestors from Galicia (Spain) for quite a few years.
After they released their first a capella cd « Palabras darei », their second one « Marmuladas », where Galician melodies blend with arrangements of Belgian musicians, Ialma carries on with passing on its songs in a style of its own, varying from authentic to modern styles which create some seductive and festive modern music .

The frame drum is one of the oldest percussion instruments in the world. It is hoop-shaped with a width greater than its depth. Most are circular though square and rectangular drums exist as well.
Originally the drum heads were made from animal skins, like cow (calf), goat, deer, fish or snakes. There are now drum heads made up of synthetic material that have the advantage of staying in tune or are tunable.
There are basically two types of frame drums, those that have jingles or rings and those that do not.
There are frame drums made for the use of mallots or sticks and there are frame drums made for the use of hands and fingers.
This drum is archetypal and found on every continent.
Each culture will have its own styles, techniques, songs, rhythms and uses.
Here you will find different samples of frame drumming around the world.
In the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and Middle east, the predominant frame drummers were women. It was used for rites of passage, for religious functions, celebrations and communal bonding.
