About me:
Women in Music is a national membership organisation that celebrates women's music making across all genres of music. We raise awareness of gender issues in music and support women musicians in their professional development. Please visit our website at www.womeninmusic.org.uk. A recent addition to our website is a Resources section. Here you will find a useful Reading List, and also our annual Proms Report, which looks at the numbers of women composers included in the programming of the Proms. (Count on one hand!) If you are a composer, why not check out Competitions and Opportunities? This section is regularly updated with details of a variety of opportunities for you to create profile for your work.
Who I'd like to meet:
If you are a women musician, or want to know more about women's music-making in the UK, have a look at the What's On section, which features a wide variety of upcoming musical performances. You can add an event to the listings by filling in an online form. See http://www.womeninmusic.org.uk/whatson.asp for details

From Jenny Fowler.
An interesting opportunity that I have just entered up
on the WiM Compos and Opps page, http://www.womeninmusic.org.uk/compsandops.asp, but thought I would also draw your
attention to;
It is a residency for a composer at the Florence Nightingale
School of Nursing and Midwifery (St Thomas') for a year:
Sept 2009 - Sept 2010. Worth £15,700 + expenses.
See: www.prsfoundation.co.uk/florencenightingale.htm

The Women in Music AGM was held on 8th Nov 2008 at the Regents Hall, Oxford Street London.

The AGM was followed by an afternoon conference, focussed on the Education of Composers.

Our guest speaker was Errollyn Wallen who described how she prepares her students for real life as a composer.

Errollyn and conference chair, Margaret Lucy Wilkins, were joined for a panel discussion by Professor Rhian Samuel and Dr Mary Bellamy.

Women in Music would like to thank Catherine Pluygers and the London New Wind Festival for hosting the event, and for the concert of music by women composers which followed the conference.

The full conference and concert programme can be viewed on the news page, under Archive.

http://www. womeninmusic. org. uk/newsletter. asp
Nicola Lefanu was sadly unable to join for our conference as she was involved in rehearsals for a production of Elisabeth Maconchy’s Heloise and Abelard. However we have the opportunity to hear her speak on women composers at this year ISM conference, which will be held on 16-18 April.
For details please see http://www. ism. org/newsevents/confprogramme. html

Women in Music is not organising any events for International Women’s Day, but we are receiving news of interesting events from other organisations.

In particular the London Composers Forum is holding an informal discussion and celebration of the work of women members on the afternoon of 8th March, in North London.
For further details of these and other events see http://www. womeninmusic. org. uk/whatson. asp
While you are there, why not add your own events using the ‘add an event’ button?
For our next AGM we are planning a discussion on Equality issues in Competitions and Opportunities. If you were an award winner from Women in Music’s Commissioning funds, 2001 and 2003, or another award, we would welcome your comments and suggestions, and updates on the impact the award has had on your work. Please e-mail info@womeninmusic.org.uk
Finally we would like to congratulate Sarah Rodgers on her election as Chair of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.

At the present time member donations are the only source of income for Women in Music. Donations, however small are valuable for our work. To ensure that charitable donations reach the intended funds it is advisable to use online facilities such as the Charities Aid Foundation.
A link is available at http://www. womeninmusic. org. uk/enquire. htm
or you can search the CAF website using our Charity Reg. Number 1013231.
