Series host Beth Anderson’s music has been described as having “a
refreshing simplicity without naiveté” and as –“deeply felt, direct, and
yes, beautiful” and “charming and deeply felt to the point of
romanticism.” Her latest CDs are new recordings by Nancy Boston of
September Swale as part of American Women: Modern Voices in Piano Music
and Aleksandra Maslovaric’s recordings of Belgian Tango and Tales 1 &
3 for violin and piano on Feminae in Musica. An essay by Ms. Anderson
about her music for American Music Center’s NewMusicBox web magazine can
be read here.
Ms. Anderson has worked with New York video artist Dmitriy Khavin to
create two videos based on her beautiful Pennyroyal Swale for string
quartet, matching the music to the Kentucky landscapes and other photos
of James Archambeault. Check them out here and here.

Tentative program:
Two world premieres: Anna Rubin's Bees for amplified violin, actress, and fixed media and one by Beth Anderson. The New York premiere of Laura Kaminsky's Music for Thelma for violin and piano, 2005. Other works include Linda Dusman's magnificat III: lament for violin and electronics, 2004; Gabriela Lena Frank's Sueños de Chambi for violin and piano, 2002; Tania León's Abanico for violin and interactive computer, 2007; Rebecca Schack's Pulse for violin and tape, 2000; and Errollyn Wallen's For Airi for violin solo, 2008.
Dreams brings together the music of women whose works evoke dreams of the past as well as those of the future. Tania León harkens back to her memory of women using hand-held fans at a funeral in her native Cuba with Abanico and Gabriela Lena Frank (whose work contains the word "Suenos" (dreams) as part of its title dreams in Spanish) creates fantastical and nostalgic miniatures based on seven photographs of a Peruvian photographer. Linda Dusman's magnificat III: lament is response to her son having a nightmare of the Iraqi War and hope for a peaceful world. In her work Bees, Anna Rubin explores the potential crisis in world food production by a colony collapse disorder affecting the bee population and her hope for an intervention. Schack's elegant fusion of classical and rock 'n' roll capture a futuristic vision of the electronic medium.
Beth Anderson and Anna Rubin's works will see their world premieres at the concert. Laura Kaminsky's Music for Thelma will receive its New York premiere. With the exception of works by Kaminsky and Frank, all works are commissioned by the performer. Kaminsky, León, and Schack are NY-based composers and both Dusman and Rubin plan to make the trip from Baltimore to NY for the performance. The program will be repeated at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the performer will seek other opportunities to perform it as many times as possible.
Admission to these concerts is $15 general, $10 for students and
seniors, with tickets available at the door starting at 7:30 PM each
evening.
