Princess Chelsea is a female composer and recording artist based in Auckland, New Zealand. She is somewhere between the ages of 16 -24.
In 2008, she sat in her bedroom for a year and set about recording her very first album.
Princess Chelsea describes the album as “chronicling my experiences growing up as a teenager and young adult in New Zealand”.
It plays like a musical. Everyday situations of love, loss and petty jealousies, are presented to us as a sort of bizarre laymans fairy tale. Think Les Mis meets classic Disney meets Philip Glass.
Harps, Glockenspiels, Xylophones, Bells, Strings, Synths, Guitars, Accordions, Horns - are all carefully arranged and layered. Melodies and counter melodies are presented individually - then gradually combined, often culminating in a glorious finale of sorts ( ‘Frack’ , ‘Overseas’, ‘Ice Reign’).
The juxtaposition of this, well - pretty sounding music, coupled with the Princess’ witty array of sharp social commentaries makes for an intriguing listen and is in keeping with a young woman who has been described as “impossibly cute” at the same time as being labelled “well, a bitch”.
One cant help but wonder if all this “princess” carry-on is some sort of piss take on the music industry’s manufactured maidens (think Hannah Montanna!) - humurous because the ‘starlet’ in this case is the producer.
Whatever the case - it seems that behind this guise of bobby sox lies a more mature individual.
An assortment of leaked crowning glories have already bedazzled those inside the World Wide Web.
Rolling Stone has called her work ‘absolutely sublime’. It has otherwise been described as ‘unique, eerie and ethereal’ or as ‘if Yann Tiersen composed the music for the next Wes Anderson film'.
Experience the magic through Lil’ Chief Records soon.
