We first started playing music together in February 1999. After a series of private parties with an ever increasing array of equipment and cover songs, we played our first paying gig on October 31st 1999 at the 'Baja Bean Restaurant' in Richmond, VA.
The original lineup of 'Sidewalk Abrasion' included the current members of 'Wonderground' and Chrissy Wessner on vocals and rhythm guitar. In June 2000, Chrissy decided to pursue other interests. We then decided to start again with a new name 'Nine Lives'.
In October 2001, we finally realized we were making an impact when a band (and their lawyer) from New York served us a 'cease and desist' notice with regards to the name 'Nine Lives' which they had been using first.
Then on 29th October 2001 a new band called 'Bar Code Red' was born...... Less than 24 hours later we realized that was an awful name. Within the week we changed our name to Wonderground. This time we did our homework and there is no similarly named band in the US.
On Febuary 9th 2002 we launched our debut CD, Order of The Mushroom. The songs were recorded, mixed and mastered in Richmond during September and October 2001. The album name is always an area of much interest. The most common theory is that the name is drug related, unfortunately we can't claim that distinction. We actually believe the real reason is a lot more interesting. Let's just say the album name comes from an indulgence of adult beverages, a mushroom shaped hot tub oxidaton float, and some very interesting swimwear.
During 2003-2004, we wrote more songs than we need for the second album, 'Mind The Gap'. Our plan is to enter the studio in late 2006 to record the final versions of our new songs. Watch this space for an update.....
