Emerging from the identity-deprived era that is the 2000s is Wood Carver, a songsmith armed with nothing more than a guitar, a voice, and the truth or how he sees it, anyway. Laced with his trademark dry wit and penchant for off-the-wall yet often poignant worldview, Carver writes tunes that manage to entertain as well as provoke thought, musing on such universal topics as death, aging, politics, and even fear of being relegated to life in a mundane profession. But quell all fears about yet another bleeding heart artist joining the ranks; Carver makes it all palatable with a good-natured stage presence that manages to win even the most hard-bitten crowd over.
Carver was a founding member of the Utah-based alternative rock quartet Old Man Johnson. The band released three independently produced albums, each to much critical and commercial acclaim. It was when fellow frontman Jordan Olsen was forced to take a leave of duty for the military that Carver began writing tunes for a solo acoustic act. While Old Man Johnsons tunes leaned more toward a wacky wit and quirky hard rock arrangements, Carvers new tunes were more reserved, ponderous and at times even emotional. After a short-lived reunion and the release of a B-sides collection, Old Man Johnson finally called it a day.
After a number of well-received acoustic outings and constant prodding from his fans, Wood set to work on his solo release. Enlisting former Old Man Johnson bandmates and long-time musical acquaintances as producers and collaborators, Wood Carver and the Hard-Hearted is an eclectic blend of the influences that have only made brief glimpses in Carvers former work. The album features five tunes with Carvers electric band, The Hard Hearted, and five stripped-down performances.
The albums lead-off track, Books on a Shelf is a low-key romp with sleepy slide guitar and lyrics of Americas increasing disdain for literature. Bear Country is a stark blues romp with Carver on swampy slide guitar and blowing Dylan-esque harmonica. Solar Cells, the albums first single, is a blast of swinging Americana as Carver meditates on human frailty and the fear of getting old. No Lifeguards hits an emotional high point with an achingly sweet violin and organ middle section and an extended rock-n-roll outro. Skinny Dipping and The Walmart Song are re-workings of older Old Man Johnson classics, with bits of barroom piano and Southwestern flavor. Unemployed could easily be CMTs next hit, with Carver and company plucking out foot-stomping country, only to be followed by the reggae bounce of Mangle. Garbage Man is a deceptively simple yet catchy tune about Carvers most feared occupation. Decay caps the album off with Carver in a reflective mood, pondering how he will be remembered by his progeny.
Carver has already begun to vigorously promote the album with a slew of performances at various clubs, restaurants and festivals. For more information, visit his website at www.woodcarvermusic.com.

I cancelled the blues jam as I was getting some great gigs on Sundays that were paying quite a bit more, and the turnout was so low on Sundays anyway. I'm trying to figure out a new night to do it that would lead to a better turnout.
