PLAN NOW FOR THE WOODZIE 2010

The 7th Annual WOODZIE, The Woodzie Twenty Ten will be in April of next year. We don't do much on this page so to stay in touch with us go to the offical Woodzie website at

www.thewoodzie.com

just remember: The Woodzie Dot Com

2009_woodzie_logo_72 This is a very small and unique 24 hour music festival on 32 tree covered acres in the Texas Hill Country. It is not commercial in any way, it's just for fun. Ours and yours. There is no admission cost and the food is communal, meaning we eat what everybody brings. Great music, lots of food; a great time for those relaxed enough to appreciate a fine day out in the country. It is all word of mouth - if you and your family are peaceful souls, you are welcome. Kids and dogs as long as neither bite and fight are welcome. Please bring a covered dish to help feed everybody - this is a singer/songwriter event but also very much a potluck bar-b-que dinner and nature experience. Setting up little campsites, stringing hammocks and playing guitars out in the woods is pretty hard to beat. Try to get here by early Saturday afternoon and yes you can drive out on Saturday night but please try to camp over - that is part of what makes this thing unique. If you are lucky enough to be able to make the time to get out here you will never forget it.

The whole story and lots of photos from past years are on the main website: The Woodzie

this is trippy. See the woodzie video a whole different way. It's a site called YoooouuuTuuube and it's the rage of the day. You can enter the URL of any video and it does it's thing with it. You can paste this URL in and experiment with the block size, shuffle, etc.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nM3R_tJooc

It was truly great. Lots of great talent, lots of food, lots of fun. We had a big crowd, felt to me just about the perfect number of people. The projection screens, the giganormus BBQ pit, the new stage setup: the Whipple Woodzie puts the pic in nic. Song circles went past 4:00 a.m., The Swindles, The Lavens, Thoze Guys, Stephen Inglis... the music all day was great. Actually Stephen Ingles was PHENOMENAL!! Casey did a great job on the stage.

Everybody loved these guys who were doing the Henna tattoos. They had a big sheet to the left of the sound tent and were doing large works of art on people's backs. I'm not sure where they came from but one of them danced with Ann/Mom for several songs and mother said they were "fine young men". Now.... I think the guy wearing the kilt had his shirt off because he was waiting for a back tattoo but I never saw him get one. I'm thinking they didn't want to let him get horizontal for fear he wasn't wearing any tighty whities. I'm totally guessin' here but I'm thinking they just didn't want to risk it.

three or four people have already sent photos from their camera.... please get them to me in one form or another soon so I can add them all together to make the slideshow that we're going to create and then leave up here all year. Here's some that have come in so far.

Renee in the sunglasses (who drove in from Silver City, New Mexico), Ann/Mom (in the red hair) Grace standing and Deirdre... and their friends around them.

    renee-mother-dap

Poppy Lungstuffing from Super Happy Funland in Houston. Lots of us, including me, are major fans of hers and I'm always honored that she comes to play every year. She and Dad played ukes together for a long time out in the woods.

Lots of people are just really, really, really into the spirit of The Woodzie and Robyn is one. It's not just from a handful of organizers, it's the energy from hundreds of people that The Woodzie runs on. Everybody adds their excitement to the air, and everybody's is a little different. Besides the music and friendship and food etc.... she totally gets that part of it is the nature experience. You just feel alive out in the raw Hill Country.

At midnight on 2 September, 1752, 11 days were summarily dropped from calendars throughout the English-speaking world. People went to sleep and, when they awoke the next morning, the date had changed to September 14. There were riots in rural villages--people thought that George II had stolen 11 days from their lives. [He was just trying to catch up with the rest of the world, which had long abandoned the Julian calendar for the Gregorian--but don't confuse us with facts! : ) Point is, there's abundant precedent for what I'm about to propose...] Be it known amongst all the Citizenry that a motion is hereby brought before this Assembly, to whit: that the following dates and days shall forthwith, forever, and without regret be deleted from this present year of 2009: 16 & 17 April; 20-24 April; and 27-30 April. Also, to hell with 1 May. (Be it noted that only weekday/workday dates are to be disappeared--we shall most assuredly need all remaining weekend days betwixt now and 2 May to string guitars, gather wenches, chop cedar, macramé hammocks, behead hogs, and pray for rain.) Upon affirmative vote of this Assembly, we may then begin to Woodzie 5 days hence, with nothing standing in the way but a brace each of Saturdays and Sundays, all extraneous days having been banished.
What say ye, Good People? Can I get an Amen?!!!?

leading up to THE WOODZIE we're doing Thursday nights from 6 to 9:30 at the Faust Hotel in New Braunfels and Sunday nights from 8:00 to midnight at Riley's Tavern which is on the same road as The Woodzie just a couple of miles closer to San Marcos. You can Google maps and info on those two locations. If you want to meet people involved and start getting warmed up to The Woodzie, come to those events in the next two weeks.
  • Apr 11 2009 5:04 AM

If you also do FaceBook please look up the Woodzie there and RSVP. Entering a search for "The Woodzie" will find the event page.
Here in two parts is the email that went out to family and friends there:

You RSVPed that you'll be attending this year's Woodzie. AWESOME! Looking forward to us all spending the first weekend of May together.

We've just started this website: http://whippleworld.com/woodzie2009/ so please visit it - make comments, ask questions. There will be updates at that site just about every day about performers, special events, ideas, advice etc.

We don't advertise the Woodzie, it isn't a public event it's more like it's based on a max of a few degrees of separation between friends. Meaning our friends passing the word to their family and friends and encouraging them to come. It's worked for five years; we've been able to walk up to anybody and ask how they were invited and we would know the people. It's cool, we're really proud of how it's worked. But each year is a new year and we have to get those invites pulsing out there for it to happen. We could use your help with that. It's 23 days away so now is the time to start.

The idea is that if you are invited you can invite people you know who are cool. If you find another family you know would completely understand this thing and they come and have a great time that makes it all work. People come to The Woodzie and wonder where this really cool vibe comes from... it's from that process. Everybody there has been invited because somebody knew they had the right spirit for it.

A really great thing that some people do is get a couple of families to come together and setup their picnic spots next to each other and have a get together within the over all get together. There is so much room, this is perfect for that. Hell, have a family reunion on us! There is only one main motivation for The Woodzie... fun. Yours and ours and as much of it as we can stuff into 24 hours.

CAMPING: Most people drive in Saturday afternoon and drive out that night and that’s cool but those people do miss a big part of it. If you have any itch to see if your family might enjoy a night in a tent in the Texas Hill County, this is the perfect opportunity because although you feel like you’re in the middle of the wild it’s actually very safe and close. It’s just two miles north of Gruene Hall but once you’re on the 32 acres it’s just oaks and elms as far and you can see. There’s running water, port-a-potties, other kids to play with…short of your own backyard it ain’t ever going to get easier than this. Hit up Academy for a $50 pop-up and do something different for a change. By God it’s going to be May Day in Texas, camp out.

As you know it’s all free but food is a HUGE part of everybody’s contribution. Our rule is for everybody to bring something delicious and lots of it to share. Start planning something amazing to bring, as if you were serious about an entry in the County Fair. :) We have a 20′ tent with two long food tables. About 300 people come all bringing food so you (and I) are going to eat like kings all day. There may be several roasted wild javelinas this year. Buttermilk pie and Texas deer meat chili and homemade bread and corn pudding casserole - just the magic stuff that you want to watch people eat to see their reaction. That’s the goal of the Woodzie potluck food spread. To make that happen we have to all make special effort. That’s your admission charge to The Woodzie and it pays off for everybody.

If you know musicians who might want to play one of the two stages, have them contact us now. Otherwise lots of opportunities to play just under the trees.

Start making your plans to get the most out of this event.
Get your kids and your friends excited about it and bring them all!

    John

Hey guys! I smell a Woodzie coming soon. And it smells like a campfire, some marshmallows and great music. Can't wait to see everyone again. Let me know if I can help with anything.
    Hearts!

My goal by the way is to provide equal oppertunity play time for everone who wants to. No more hour long sets! (unless you are a special guest) No more people not getting to play because we ran out of time or there was no organization.
Even in hippie land there can be a slight bit of order =)!
  • Feb 15 2009 5:12 PM

If anyone wants to play on the main stage at the Woodzie - please submit a set list consisting of the number of songs you would like to play - the estimated length of your set - and your preferred time of day to play.
Please also let me know if it will be just you or if you will need to set up a whole band before hand - thanks! Casey

    Hey there,
We're excited to finally get our MySpace privileges back. We've been able to update our page again! It features Brooks Williams, a very cool (as in slick, effortless, natural) guitar player. Check him out. And of course email us if you want info on his SA concert.

John? Izzat you? The circus thang sounds like Glenn, but the farm animal deal definitely-effin'ately smells like Mike, so this is prob'ly Brad, right? :) Peace, P
