1986 gründeten Fiddi und Dieter die Band. Aus den Anfangsbuchstaben ihrer Nachnamen entstand der Name der Band: WOOP (gesprochen: WOPP). Bald gesellte sich zu den beiden ein Bassist (Charly), Daddel als Banjospieler sowie ein Keyboarder (Ägge). Daher wurde die Band zu WOOP & Friends. Nach einiger Zeit verschwand Friedhelm im musikalischen Vorruhestand und wurde durch Christian ersetzt. 1996 stieg auch Daddel aus, wenig später Christian. Anfang 1997 stießen Virgil und Martin zur Band. Charly zog sich zurück und Daddel wurde als Bassist reaktiviert. In der Besetzung - Dieter, Ägge, Daddel, Martin und Virgil wurden 1999 und 2002 die ersten beiden CD's veröffentlicht. 2004 stieg Ägge aus, um sich in einer Schlagercombo zu verwirklichen. Sein Nachfolger wurde Kaschi, der uns im Sommer 2007 abhanden kam. Seitdem wurden die Lieder umarrangiert, um sie auch als Quartett ohne Keyboards zu spielen. Ende 2007 tauchte Fiddi wieder auf und nahm als Produzent mit der Band die aktuelle CD auf. Sie erschien 2008 unter dem Titel: "Out Of Control". Auf dieser Seite könnt Ihr Euch Titel der CD anhören. Im Oktober 2009 stieg Daddel aus. Nach einem Bassisten wird derzeit geforscht. Alle aktiven und ehemaligen Mitglieder trafen sich 2006 zum Konzert zum 20-jährigen Bestehen der Band. WOOP & Friends machen Irish Pub Folk, am liebsten in Kneipen um die Gäste bei Guinness und Kilkenny zu unterhalten. Wir sind aber auch bei Open-Airs und Stadtfesten zu sehen. Dank unserer Fans sind wir jetzt 23 Jahre dabei und würden uns freuen auch Euch mal bei einem unserer Gigs begrüssen zu können. Oder wie Barney von den Dubliners sagt: "It's too late to stop now."
The story so far:
While watching the soccer world cup 1986 on television Dieter and Fiddi got the idea to make some music together. So they grabbed their guitars, played some tunes and called the band "WOOP" because of the first two letters of their surnames. Soon three other guys joined the band. There were Charly (bass), Daddel (banjo & guitar) and Ägge (keyboards). The band developed to "WOOP & Friends". Then Fiddi got overboard and Charlys son Christian replaced him.
In the end of 1996 Daddel and Christian left the band. So Dieter recruited the rumanian Hendrix-disciple Virgil for lead guitar and banjo and the former metal-guitarist Martin for rhythm guitar. WOOP & Friends was hardly working at full strength when Charly retired. But just a few days later we captured Daddel and fitted him with the bass guitar. This line-up --- Dieter, Ägge, Daddel, Virgil and Martin --- recorded the first two CD's in 1999 and 2002. In the middle of 2004 Ägge decided to play organ in another band. Kaschi took over the keyboards. 2006 all nine musicians met to celebrate the twentieth anniversery of WOOP & Friends with a special session. When Kaschi vanished in 2007 we decided to play our music without keyboards in the future. Then one stormy evening Fiddi stood in the door. With him as producer we recorded our current CD called: "Out of control". Fiddi now works in the band as technician. He is also a great magician. His greatest trick is to turn full beer bottles into empty as quick as lightning. In the meantime he also plays tin whistle and banjo. The latest news is that Daddel quit and WOOP & Friends are looking for a bassman. Nevertheless we still play Irish pub folk in the bars around as well as on Open-Airs.
