Hello there, Master Jough...just stopping by to see how the beginning of this new year is treating you? You've been living in Chicago for a bit now, not too long yet, but not a newbie anymore...so how's that going? And the new job? Hope everything's going well...

That photo was taken at Eddystone Elementary, but it wasn't our regular photo (we had one of those too) it was an EXTRA photo session for those EXTRA patriotic kids. I love how I'm wearing a fancy dress that clashes awfully with the background and though it looks like I didn't even brush my hair, I did put a big white bow in it. As if all that patriotism wasn't enough, I also have the big gold cross to prove that not only was I patriotic, I was also a good Christian. And I have that shit-eating smirk on my face because I had braces and was trying to hide them. Again, worried about my appearance, but didn't bother to brush my hair. Glorious.

Happy New Year, young'un. So, I'm still most likely coming to Chicago, but instead of driving out with the hubby I'll be flying out with my sis-in-law to stay with my brother while he trains out there for 3 weeks at the end of the month. Not sure of the exact dates yet but just warning you that I'm coming to town!

Yeah, whoever came up with the idea to slap a picture on a plastic jumpsuit and pair it with a suffocating mask with tiny slits for eyeholes must have made a mint. Parents nowadays buy expensive cloth costumes that actually LOOK like what they're supposed to be! Wacky. I have a photo of me and a kid who was 'E.T.' His drugstore costume was (of course) a plastic jumpsuit--the legs were yellow and the top was black and there was a picture of E.T. on the chest. I don't remember E.T. being yellow or black, do you? But the picture on the chest and the mask let you know who the kid is supposed to be. Wonderful.

I can't believe how soon you are leaving. We are driving to AZ with an eye to moving there next summer so I can understand on a smaller scale the nervous excitement you must be feeling. Every time I think about moving that far and to that new and different a place I get so excited but then also a little freaked. Just the logistics of moving all your stuff that far is a daunting prospect. Like I said before, my brother just got back from a visit and he said Chicago is his favorite of all the cities he's been to--and he's been to a fair number of cities here in the US and in Europe. Not that you care what my brother thinks, hehe. But I'm really excited for you, I think it is going to be so awesome. And oddly, when he was out there he ran into Mary Doolittle--did you know her? She was a year younger than us but she and I were tennis doubles partners back in the day--isn't that crazy?

Hey Master Jough,
Funny you should mention that...my boy is definately still trick or treat age, he was actually going to go out with his friends but they're acting like a bunch of little shits to him so he & I are both going out together...yes I am getting dressed up & passing myself off as a kid (I guess being only 5' 2" does have its benefits). Needless to say I don't need all that extra candy around but I think it will be some much needed fun instead of all the daily chaos. Michael Myers & Jason...how cliche right? But I fashion up some pretty creative costumes if I do say so myself lol.
Oh, I meant to write earlier...if I don't get a chance to meet up with you before you go, good luck in Chicago. That is a big change huh? But that's great that the opportunity came up for you. I'll definately be keeping in touch, you too...anytime.

Chicago? Wow, that is awesome. My brother just went out there in August and loved it. My husband and I are driving to Arizona and back in February and we want to drive out to Chicago and then head south. Maybe we could meet up and you could show us around. That's so cool that you're moving there. I'm jealous:)

What I love about you Jough is your ability to be offensive and sweet at the same time. You will say anything (and always have, since high school) and can be cutting at times, but with such a deft touch that your target is left grinning (or too shocked/offended to be able to respond, hehe). I remember once in French 4 towards the end of senior year you brought your guitar to class. We were all just hanging out (I remember rarely doing work in that class) and you started playing. You were really good and I was surprised since I had no idea you played and I blurted out, "Wow, did you take lessons?" Not even looking up from the strings you said, dripping with sarcasm, "No, this is my first time playing." and everyone cracked up. I know I blushed, embarassed for a second at looking stupid and annoyed at being giving a sarcastic answer to an earnest question. But it was said with such perfect timing and was just so...Jough that I quickly got over being uptight about it and laughed with everyone else. I have told that story to many people over the years--I just love it, and I can still picture you sitting there next to the window wearing your Chuck Taylors and dishing out sarcasm in exactly timed dollops to one and all. I mean all of this as high compliment, by the way. You made me smile when I read your blog comment, in spite of myself. And now I have something that makes me grin when I think about that stupid news article, instead of gritting my teeth. You're a good friend, you comfort but you never let people dramatize themselves or take themselves more seriously than they should. Thanks for making me laugh today:)
