WORD!'s Blurbs |
About me:
WORD! is the longest running spoken word event in Leicester city. It's an open mic for open minds night where local talent can emerge and be heard in a welcoming atmosphere; by a friendly, diverse and appreciative audience. It runs on the first Tuesday of every month at the wonderful Y Theatre in Leicester and features an open mic as well as a booked act.
WORD! launches at The Y on Tuesday 7th of October - simultaneously celebrating Black History Season and the period around National Poetry Day.
WORD! has booked Patience Agbabi to perform in October. Born in London to Nigerian parents she spent her teenage years living in North Wales. Patience read English Language and Literature at Oxford University and is the author of three major collections, her first winning the Excelle Literary Award. She has been a poet in residence with the Poetry Society, featured on Channel 4 television and has been commissioned by BBC Blue Peter. She has read across the UK and around the world and now she is coming to Leicester. See her read from her new collection Bloodshot Monochrome and remember the experience for a long time.
“Agbabi is a fine poet, and her linguistic wit carries satirical fire” Daily Telegraph
Henceforth WORD! at The Y on the first TUESDAY of every month. The Notorious World Raffle will be replaced by the jolly decent ticket price of £2/3.
Other future booked acts are:
November: Rachel Pantechnicon
Rachel Pantecnicon is an hilarious, observant performer of poetry and stories. Her specialism lies in ‘motivational poetry for cats and for people’. She is also kept busy with a sideline in writing and illustrating children’s books such as the curiously titled Cheesegrater Leg-Iron Lion. Having performed extensively country-wide, in 2004 Rachel earned the meritorious accolade of Glastonbury Festival Poetry Slam Champion. Now Rachel is set to light up Leicester with her lyrical wit and astute observations. Don’t miss out on a brilliant night at Word! with Rachel Pantechnicon.
December: Adisa
Adisa first made a name for himself on the London performance poetry circuit, quickly earning himself a reputation for being a powerful artist of observation and reflection whilst subtly weaving humour through his work. His rhymes and rhythms are delivered with Africanism as an anchor and Edutainment as his mantra: Adisa believes a good performance should entertain whilst giving the audience something to ruminate over. Indeed, Benjamin Zephaniah exclaimed: ‘Adisa is the future, it’s so good to have something to look forward to’, after judging him in the New Performance Poet of the Year competition. Word! is proud to present Adisa. Be there.
January: Joolz Denby
Joolz Denby is a highly acclaimed professional writer, spoken-word artist, photographer and illustrator, noted particularly for her dramatic and emotive performances and the musical quality of her voice. She has been awarded and nominated multifariously for her creative output: New Crime Writer of the Year is just one prestigious accolade. Joolz is hailed as being ‘the Queen of British Spoken-word’, performing in venues as widely-varied as they are impressive: The Royal Albert Hall, the House of Commons and a number of festivals to name but a few. Now Joolz comes to Leicester especially for you lucky people at Word! Make sure you’re there for what is certain to be an enthralling event.
Here follows, 'A Handy Guide to WORD!' ...
1. WORD! is the Leicester's longest running spoken word night.
2. It always features an open mic AND an exciting pro booked act.
3. If you want to perform on the open mic, arrive for 7.30pm - the list fills fast.
4. ....We're really sorry, we can't pre-book you a slot.
5. We love you. We love your work. Your ORIGINAL
work...leave the Keats and Hegley for the interval, read your own stuff over the mic!
6. WORD! is constituted voluntary group, run entirely on its ticket price (previously raffle). Your ticket price pays for the booked act - without whom the night would be less of a night.
7. WORD! is brought to you by...
Lydia Towsey (Chair)
Rakesh Parmer (Treasurer)
Stephanie Fawcett (Secretary)
Pam Thompson (Secret Weapon)
Jo Twist (Anachist)
Sureshot (Quiet Man)
Alex Williams (New Romantic)
and many other jolly decent friends. If you'd like to be our friend, we don't want money, we want blood - no, no! heavens not really, we just want to know you care, see you often and hear your thoughts. Get in touch if you want to find out more about how you can help.
8. For reasons of continuity WORD! is presented by a small and devout band of poet comperes. These people are:
Steve Rooney
Lydia Towsey
Rob Gee and
Kerry Featherstone.
Like crops, we work on rotation.
