FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13 Powell (the Polite Rebel)
with Sean Patrick Taylor and Gavan Duffy
Powell, the polite rebel, was raised on a dairy farm in Carthage, New York, where he was surrounded by outlaw country music, trucker ballads, and protest folk songs. He began writing songs when he was 14 and just released Replevin, his first album as a solo artist. Powell was selected by Savoy/429 Records to lend a track to the new release called The Village, which celebrates the folk songs of Greenwich Village in the 1960s and features performances by Lucinda Williams, Amos Lee, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Marshall Crenshaw, and many more. Powell recently returned from a tour that took him to 60 cities in two and a half months, and he is excited to play for his hometown crowd at Jazz Central.
Sean Patrick Taylor is the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for the Syracuse rock band the Shakedown.
Gavan Duffy is a long-time frustrated songwriter who, while serving on the faculty of Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, recently found his muse. In his youth, he produced underground newspapers, alternative radio, and participated in the civil rights and peace movements in Texas.
The lap of windshield wipers late at night...love, lost and found...the ring of guitar strings...unexpected grooves...conversations overheard in a bar...weird piano chords...things you wish you'd said...wondering if anyone else knows the feeling...
Sounds Like
One hell of a cool show. "A veritable smorgasbord for all music fans, from smoky blues to light and sentimental country and upbeat folk songs," in the words of the Syracuse New Times reviewing the series' premiere.

The Words and Music series is all about building and celebrating a community of musicians and music lovers, so hey: get involved. How?
> Be a friend on MySpace or Facebook--and spread the word to friends, troubadours, and all creative souls.
> Use the Grab Box to post a banner, widget, music player, or schedule anywhere on the Web (blogs, MySpace pages, bulletins, comments...). Just copy and paste the code--it's easy!
> Suggest a songwriter to perform...or suggest yourself!Email me.
If you're interested in performing at the showcase, tell me a little about yourself and your music. Briefly describe your original songs and where/how you've performed them (and remember that great songs are more important than great credits). Send links to two or three songs I can hear online--choose tracks that are closest to how you sound playing solo.
Thanks for supporting original music.
