Series host Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers won a Lennon Award, and a grand prize, for best country song in the 2008 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. In addition to performing his own music, he is a contributor to NPR’s All Things Considered, author of Rock Troubadours and The Complete Singer-Songwriter, and founding editor of Acoustic Guitar magazine.

Upcoming performers, with links to their home pages. Shows are at Jazz Central in Syracuse unless otherwise noted.

THURSDAY, JUNE 25
Colin Aberdeen and Mark Nanni of Los Blancos
with Willie "Taters" Mavins

Colin Aberdeen founded two award-winning Central New York bands: the raucous old-time blues band the Westcott Jugsuckers, the first band to play the world-famous Dinosaur BBQ, and Los Blancos, which performs what is referred to as “a mongrel mix of American roots music.” Aberdeen plays blues, rags, and originals and has toured all over the country and as far away as Australia sharing his love of American roots music. He has performed with musical luminaries such as Hubert Sumlin, David Bromberg, Roy Book Binder, Terrance Simien, Bernard Allison, Ronnie Earl, Merl Saunders, Double Trouble, and Govt. Mule.

Mark Nanni has played keyboard and accordion with Los Blancos for more than ten years. He also performs with his own band, The Intention, as well as playing solo piano gigs, recording, producing, and teaching.

Willie "Taters" Mavins is a singer and songwriter who performs with the band Quick Change the acoustic duo Ken and Willie. For ten years he hosted the open mic at Syracuse’s famed Orange Grove.

InfluencesThe lap of windshield wipers late at night...love, lost and found...the ring of guitar strings...unexpected grooves...conversations overheard in a bar...weird piano chords...things you wish you'd said...wondering if anyone else knows the feeling...
Sounds LikeOne hell of a cool show. "A veritable smorgasbord for all music fans, from smoky blues to light and sentimental country and upbeat folk songs," in the words of the Syracuse New Times reviewing the series' premiere.

About Words and Music Songwriter Showcase

The Words and Music Songwriter Showcase is a celebration of original music from Central New York and beyond, featuring established and emerging artists of all genres in an up-close-and-personal acoustic setting.

The series host is singer-songwriter, author, and NPR contributor Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers. Each show includes:

> A featured artist performing a full set, plus an opening set of songwriters in the round.

> The Song Schmooze, where musicians and music lovers mingle over a drink and a bite to eat.

> Plus special guests…surprise collaborations…and the Soundbite of the Night, where Rodgers shares a memorable moment from his extraordinary archive of interviews with artists such as Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Jerry Garcia, Ani DiFranco, and Dave Matthews.

The Words and Music series presents concerts at Jazz Central, an intimate theater at 441 E. Washington Street in downtown Syracuse, New York (map it); and at the Auburn Public Theater. To reserve tickets, email showcase@wordsandmusic.info.

Calling all CNY songwriters
Come join the Woods and Music Songwriter Woodshed. This is a musicians-only gathering where you can share a work in progress and get feedback from your peers. The Woodshed meets the first Tuesday of each month at Sparky Town in Syracuse. Click here for details.

The Words and Music series is all about building and celebrating a community of musicians and music lovers, so hey: get involved. How?

If you're interested in performing at the showcase, tell me a little about yourself and your music. Briefly describe your original songs and where/how you've performed them (and remember that great songs are more important than great credits). Send links to two or three songs I can hear online--choose tracks that are closest to how you sound playing solo.

Thanks for supporting original music.

Awesome. Just awesome. It is totally amazing to see that many musicians and music related people in the same room with fans and music aficionados. I love what you are doing! I only wish we didn't live an hour away. Is there any way you'd ever consider the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton? Or the Park Coffee House in Holland Patent? Just for a show here or there? I would be willing to help out for sure!!! :-) We will continue to attend your events in Syr. though.
;-)
