Workingirls Live @ Texas Heat Music and Arts Fest!
The Workingirls were just a name on paper and a few 4 track demos in 1999. It wouldn't be until 2003 that the idea of the Workingirls becoming an actual band would transpire. Kevin Corley a songwriter and musician of fifteen years is the man behind the music. He was born and raised in Houston Texas. A product of the Eighties. Corley played in numerous bands in the Nineties. Texas legends like The Dragsters, Stol and Undersole to name a few. Corley joined the Risk of Austin Tx. in 2001 where he met Hugo Kohn. "Hugo was on drums and I was on the bass" says Corley. The two became great friends and a staple of the Austin music and social scene. "We were out of our minds back then." "We worked hard and played harder." "Thanks to the other half of the Risk sponsoring are crazy asses!" After two years, numerous shows and recording an amazing ep with the Risk, the band decided to take a sabbatical. Corley went back to Houston and spent his time writing material and learning other instruments. "I did it backwards." "I learned guitar, bass, drums and then piano." Corley worked on sound design and started looking for musicians to form the Workingirls. He ran into Hugo about a year later. Hugo was also looking for a gig. Corley said "Let's do this." The Workingirls went from a page in a notebook to Band. After two years of writing and rehearsal the band went public in 2005. The band was immediately well recieved. Energetic and eratic live shows created a nice buzz. Various friends of the two would fill in live, but Kohn remained a fixture of the band. Corley says "It's dark pop for the zeros." "We deal in urban debauchery and sarcastic verbosity." "I was a little surprised at first, I mean I didn't think we sucked, but I didn't think we would be this well recieved." "People were really into it." Corley contributes their success to the songs themselves. "It's the pop element I think" "They are songs you can sing and relate to." "I listen to all kinds of music." "from noise to Sade, but the music I listen to the most is the shit I have cranked to ten in the car that I'm singing to." In 2006 the Workingirls recorded two singles, followed by the cult classic "texas/bitch" in late 2007. With some press, tv, film and college radio starting to take an interest in the band, it seems the Workingirls are turning more than local heads. Corley says "We're just making music we like." "If it compared to someone successful, it's a compliment." "If it sounds like someone who sucks, it's not." "The one thing I have learned over the years is, you want to be liked or disliked." "If you're in the middle, you're simply not noticed." The Workingirls are currently in the studio recording their next album titled "the Lipstick Incident" to be released in 2009.
