Current mood:smartI am driving down the road one summer afternoon. The hills are thick with vegetation, and it is a pleasant day for a drive. I barrel around the sharp curves and slow as I pass a group of joggers on the shoulder. I make another sharp curve, the last one before the top of the hill, and I am blinded by a bright light over the road, like a flash.
I wince and squint, and hit the brakes; I don't want to be blinded and hit something up here. I pull over and let my eyes adjust, and my mind is racing.
What is that light?
I notice that a car coming from the other way has come to a stop on their shoulder not 100 ft away, presumably for the same reason I did. The man gets out and walks toward me, and the light has moved a bit to the North, over the next hill. I get out of my car also and as he walks up we are both watching this bright light in the sky. "My god, what is that?" he asks, rhetorically. He seems a bit panicky, so I answer anyways "Dunno."
We stand there for a few moments, and could feel the air practically humming around us. The light grows even brighter and seems to move towards us again. and in a few seconds it is hard to make out anything in the blinding light around us.
And on the road coming toward us are four shapes, spindly legs moving their small bodies closer. The heads seem too big and devoid of any features save what seems to be large eyes: the light silhouettes them in a peculiar fashion.
This is it. Alien encounter.
We Freak out.
The light starts to fade over the top of the hill and normal daylight takes over. The four shapes come closer and into focus, the alien silhouettes replaced by multicolored spandex.
Four old women stand there, and one of them raises her goggles from her head. "What was that light?" she asks.
The guy and I look at each other and start laughing. Tension broke, I answer the woman. " I don't know." These women had been the group of joggers I had passed just moments ago.
The light was gone, but the questions remained.
