About me: In a May, 2008 press release, Unicef the United Nations Children's Agency announced that up to six million children in Ethiopia, Africa under the age of five require urgent preventive health and nutrition intervention. Extremely high levels of severe malnutrition are now reported in the very short term. An increasing drought is projected to leave more than 2.2 million Ethiopians struggling to survive without sufficient food, health, nutrition and care. It is being called the "Green Famine" because some rains have been reported, but weather forecasts indicate that these are unlikely to replenish water sources. Over 2 million are estimated to be in need of immediate water, hygiene and sanitation assistance. Malnutrition rates among children are rising quickly. Of the 20 million oprhans in Africa, five million are from Ethiopia, and this number could drastically increase without immediate assistance.
Here on the Central Coast we can easily take for granted clean drinking water, bountiful produce, and access to health care. Now is our chance to lend a hand to this urgent crisis. Uprising, a local grassroots non-profit is hosting the "World Reggae Benefit : for the Children of Ethiopia" October Saturday 18, 2008 12:00 am to 5:00 at the San Lorenzo Park Duck Pond Stage. It is an all day event world music concert including several well know bay area reggae bands, an art auction, a goods drive, speaker, and educational and cultural displays.
