Top 10 Wrestlers of the 21st Century

BET recently did a list of greatest rappers of the 21st century, which was a clever way to do a top ten list without having to bog it down with old school MCs, and have more relevant people on there. I thought the same idea would work for wrestlers, let’s get away from the past and do:....

THE TOP TEN WRESTLERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY....

Criteria: Wrestler must have won his first World championship (not IC or US) or accolade (King of the Ring, Rumble, etc…) after 1999.....

10) Eddie Guerrero: I can give you ten reasons why Chris Benoit should have this spot. But I can give you TWO big reasons why he’s not going to get it. Eddie was Mexican and proud of it before it became fashionable to rep your people. And on his way to another title reign before his death. Lie, cheat, steal will never die.....

9) Rey Mysterio: Mr. 619 was already a living legend by the time his WCW contract was brought out by WWE. But Rey did something in WWE that has never been done since—he got over as a little guy. Sure he’s been playing the same character for the past 9 years, but I guess it’s smart to stick with what works. ....

8) Randy Orton:  From the day Orton debuted you knew he was going to be big. Probably the best heel character since Triple H, Orton’s baby face run has been mediocre, but you can’t deny that if Orton died today, his legacy would be intact.....

7) AJ Styles: The Best pound for pound wrestler in the sport, sure TNA may be using him as “Mr. Red Belt” but AJ is a world class champion and there is a reason he was the longest reigning TNA World champ in history.....

6) Chris Jericho: Not much you can say about Y2J, the millennium man defined what it meant to be a star in the early 2000’s and has proven he still has what it takes a cagey veteran. We’re not worthy.....

5) Kurt Angle: He won an Olympic Gold Medal and he broke his friggin neck as he’ll point out over and over again. But Angle is the only legit bad ass left in pro wrestling and the first Amateur to get over in the world of “fake”. It’s true.....

4) Jeff Hardy: The Kurt Cobain of pro wrestling. Jeff Hardy hates the spotlight, loves the risk, and has captivated the wrestling world for all the wrong reasons and all the right reasons. His victory over Triple H and Edge for the WWE title remains one of the best moments in WWE history. And his Immortal swerve has turned TNA upside down.....

3) Edge: You think you know him? As Edge’s career winds down, it’s a given that even if he never becomes 10x champ, he’s a hall of famer. Tag Team specialist, Mr Money In The Bank, and the ability to be loved and hated at the same time. Edge reeks of awesomeness.....

2) Brock Lesnar: Before he became the UFC champ, Brock was the next big thing in wrestling. The much needed villain in black who could have held his own in the days of Andre and Bundy yet put the finishing touches on the attitude era when he sent the Rock packing to Hollywood. He came, he saw, he conquered. And like that he was gone before he had time to fall off. Now that’s a career.....

1) John Cena: Before he was Superman, he was an obnoxious rap spewing punk in a throwback jersey. John’s counter culture swag resulted in millions of fans wanting to be down with the coolest kid in the ring. Usually wrestlers falter as they become “say your prayers eat your vitamin” faces, but Cena’s managed to become more popular with his inoffensive Marine salutes and Never Give Up messages. Love him or Hate him, you can’t name another wrestler in the past ten years who has made a bigger impact on the business. No One Can See John Cena.....
