Writ on Water began in Fullerton, California, in early 1991 when Daniel Johnson and Jeff MacKey were joined by drummer Joel Hughes. Guitarist Miles Williams was brought on board later that year to complete the original lineup.
After signing with Blonde Vinyl, 'Sylph' was recorded in the Summer of 1992 and released in December of that year. Unfortunately, financial difficulties led to the dissolution of the label in the Spring of 1993.

Prior to the release of 'Sylph,' the band began working on 4-track demos for what was intended to be the second Blonde Vinyl release, titled 'The Greyest Day.' After Joel and Miles left the band to pursue other interests over the course of the following year, the now 2-member Writ on Water completed the project in demo form. With no new recording deal in the offing, the project was shelved, and Daniel and Jeff took a long hiatus.
In 1999, improvements in technology having in the interim broadened the options for music distribution, Daniel and Jeff decided to release 'The Greyest Day Sessions,' which consists of the 4-track demos originally recorded in preparation for the 'The Greyest Day' via the original incarnation of mp3.com (special thanks to Pudge for his invaluable assistance).

Following the cyber-release of 'TGDS,' Writ on Water recorded six additional tracks which had been written during the same time period as 'The Greyest Day' (some of which had been performed live) but had not yet been recorded. This session became the 'Pelléas' EP, which was released online in 2000.

Writ on Water commenced work on a new album in 2001, along with drummer Jared Mackey and a guest appearance by Travelogue's Jon Sonnenberg, and recording continued into 2002. After remaining unfinished for five years, 'A Wingless King' was completed in late 2007 and released on February 29, 2008.
