Über das WJO:

Das Wuerzburg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) wurde im Frühjahr 2005 als Nachfolge Band der „Big Band der Jazzinitative Würzburg e.V.“ von dem Posaunisten, Komponisten und Bandleader Markus Geiselhart gegründet. Seither spielte das WJO 36 Konzerte bei denen 32 Produktionen mit über 100 Beteiligten (Musiker, Komponisten, Arrangeure, Schauspieler, Tänzer) zur Aufführung kamen. Diese Zahlen belegen, dass sich das WJO seit seiner Gründung zu einer der kreativsten Big Bands der deutschsprachigen Szene entwickelt hat und es ist eines der wenigen freiberuflichen Jazzorchester Deutschlands. Neben einem Stamm aus Würzburger Musikern speist sich die Besetzung dieser einmaligen Institution mit Musikern aus dem gesamten Bundesgebiet, aber auch mit Musikern aus Österreich und Holland. Somit spiegelt das WJO mit drei beteiligten EU- Nationen auch den europäischen Gedanken wieder. Bereits bei seinem ersten Konzert an Ostern 2005 mit dem Programm „Tribute to Don Ellis feat. Thomas Gansch“ erlangte das WJO Beachtung weit über die Grenzen der Stadt Würzburg hinaus. So war es mit diesem Programm die erste Big Band in Europa die seit dem Tod von Don Ellis wieder ein komplettes Programm aus seinem Repertoire aufgeführt hat. In den folgenden Jahren erlangte das WJO durch weitere interessante und einzigartige Projekte, wie etwa „the other side of mozART“ , „A Tribute to Jaco Pastorius feat. Robert Riegler“, „Little Circus Girl feat. Caroline de Rooij“ oder „The Music of the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble feat. Herbert Joos“, sowie durch die Zusammenarbeit mit international renommierten Künstlern (z.B. mathias rüegg, Adrian Mears, Ingolf Burkhardt, Ed Partyka, Herwig Gradischnig, Karin Bachner, Peter Fulda u.v.a.) innerhalb kürzester Zeit überregionale Aufmerksamkeit und wurde zu einem wichtigen Kulturbotschafter für die Stadt Würzburg. Konzerte des WJO wurden mehrmals vom Bayerischen Rundfunk (BR) mitgeschnitten und gesendet.

Über Markus Geiselhart:

Markus Geiselhart wurde 1977 in Stuttgart geboren und studierte von 1999 bis 2004 Jazz-Posaune in Würzburg. 2005 gründete er das Wuerzburg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) und leitet dieses seither sowohl musikalisch als auch organisatorisch. Seit 2006 lebt er in Wien und arbeitet als freiberuflicher Posaunist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Bandleader. Neben seiner Arbeit mit dem WJO leitet er in Wien das „Markus Geiselhart Orchestra (MGO)“, sowie das „Don Ellis Tribute Orchestra“ zusammen mit Thomas Gansch. Neben seinen zahlreichen Big Band Aktivitäten inszenierte er mit seinen verschiedenen kleineren Ensembles auch immer wieder kunstspartenübergreifende Projekte, wie etwa die multimediale Hommage an Albert Mangelsdorff „Hut ab“ oder eine Jazz & Lyrik Produktion mit Texten von Gottfried Benn. Daneben schrieb er verschiedene Auftragskompositionen für Big Bands und Theater. Er ist u.a. Dozent beim Landesjugendjazzorchester Bayern für die „Jazz Juniors“-Kurse und bei verschiedenen weiteren Jazz- und Big Band Workshops.

About the WJO:

The Würzburg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) was founded in 2005 in Würzburg (Germany) by Markus Geiselhart. Since then the founder and leader has moved to Vienna and, there, works most actively and successfully as a musician, composer and band leader. The WJO is one of the few existing freelance jazz-orchestras whose musicians are all professionals. They are not only from the town Würzburg itself but also from the entire German and Austrian territory. They have all been members of youth-jazz-orchestras of the respective federal states (Landesjugendjazzorchester) or of the famous youth-orchestra of the Federal Republic of Germany conducted by Peter Herbolzheimer (Bundesjugendjazzorchester). The WJO has set itself a goal to include in concerts the rarely performed big band literature and compositions of both young European composers and of its band members. Hereby the Kenny Clark – Francy Bolang Big Band and the Vienna Art Orchestra serve as an example for the WJO. Already in 2005, the WJO’s foundation, the orchestra attained a high level of notable achievements and success both at National and International level. The WJO kicked off on Easter Sunday in 2005 and was the first European band ever to perform in the theatre Würzburg (Grosses Haus des Würzburger Mainfranken Theater) a programme with compositions entirely by Don Ellis. During the concert, which carried the title Tribute to Don Ellis, the achievements of the trumpet player (deceased 1978) were acknowledged. The trumpet player Thomas Gansch, former member of the Vienna Art Orchestra and foundation-member of Mnozil Brass, was the guest soloist on this evening. In summer 2005 the WJO impressed its audience once more during Open Air concerts in Mainbernheim and Würzburg. During the 2005 Würzburg jazz festival, the WJO performed the suite Continental Call (for solo guitar / comp. by Ed Partyka) being only the second band ever to do so in full length. Since January 2006 the WJO has performed in the Würzburger Bockshorn on a regular basis; and since November 2006 with its own concert programme named Würzburg Big Band Lounge. The WJO gave an open-air concert at Würzburger Efeuhof in July 2006 and took the opportunity there to present its first CD Artistry in Rhythm – The Music of Stan Kenton – feat. Ed Partyka. This had been recorded live in May 2006 at one of the concerts in the Würzburger Bockshorn. During the jazz festival in Würzburg in 2006 the suite the other side of MozART, which is written for jazz-orchestra and composed by big band leader Markus Geiselhart himself, was recorded by the renowned Bavarian broadcasting company Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). The suite was an official contribution to the year of Mozart in 2006. The WJO embodies power, professionalism and young energy on a highly recognized level.
