BOOTLEG
LEROY POWELL
sings the Roger Miller classic, River in the Rain. This is a live bootleg of a show performed at Rockwood Music Hall on November 10, 2007.
LEROY POWELL
- COUNTRY & BLUES - His sound is derived out of seventies outlaw country and sixties electric blues.
He was raised in Redlands, Ca. His father started him out on singing and playing guitar at the age of ten. Powell would later learn to play bass, drums, harmonica, fiddle, and pedal steel.
He moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and started singing and playing with an eclectic group of musicians. Funk, R&B, blues, and rock bands including members of Spearhead, Fishbone, Gene Loves Jezebel, Blink 182, and Ike Turner. It wasn’t until 2001 that Leroy changed his tune and started to focus on a more countrified sound. With fiddle player, Travis Parker, he began to experiment pushing the boundries of country music. Adding to it all of their other influences, they played classic country songs and married them to more psychedelic interpretation. In 2004 Leroy met Shooter Jennings and fused his musical sounds with the Rock and Roll, Jennings. Together they recorded four albums and toured across the country for three years. Albums include - Put the "O" Back in Country, Electric Rodeo, Live at Irving Plaza, and The Wolf. Jennings performed songs written by Powell. These include "Lonesome Blues," "Busted in Baylor County," "Hair of the Dog," "The Alligator Chomp," and "Slow Train."
In 2007 he released his self titled album, LEROY POWELL, co-produced by Powell and Dave Cobb. The album includes the song "Keep the Diamond" which was made into a video directed with Gina Gershon and Robin Davey.
Also in 2007 he worked with Gershon on her album, In Search of Cleo, and went on to score and musically direct her one-woman-show of the same name.
Recently Powell played on the post-humous recording by Waylon Jennings. Tenatively called, Waylon and the 357’s,. His psychedelic sound fused with traditional country is an unexpected interpretation of a country legend’s songs.
He is currently working on a new album to be called, Angles and Curves. The album is mostly self-produced, including tracks in which he collaborated with legendary music producer, Eddie Kramer. Drums are played by his younger brother, Chris “Tugboat” Powell. Slade McCombs from Santa Cruz, CA is on bass. Brian Allen from Indianapolis also is on bass. And long time L.A. country music veteran Jason “Rowdy J” Cope from Black Mountain, NC filling out the group on guitar.
In early 2008 Leroy Powell and the Messengers came into being. This group consists of Brian Allen on Bass, Chris Powell on Drums, and Johnny Stachela on guitars.
He’s shared the stage with the likes of Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr, David Allan Coe, Kris Kristofferson, Dickey Betts, Jessi Colter, Billy Joe Shaver, Charlie Pride, the Marshall Tucker Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

So sad that you couldn't make it out to the ole Powell reunion. You were missed dearly! But, hell, the real party will be up here in 2 years anyway. Let me know when you will be anywhere near our neck of the woods. Love you cuz!
I’m just stopping by to say “Thanks for being in my Circle of MySpace Friends”, and to hopefully make you smile today.
The Bathtub Test
During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.
"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No" said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"
ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON, OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE ?
