transmogrify	Mar 3 2009 11:30 PM The critically endangered New Zealand Fairy Tern, (Sterna nereis davisae), currently less than 40 birds, 10 breeding pairs.Early 1980's there were 4 breeding pairs. This is the male of a successful breeding pair this season, at Pakiri Beach Two fledglings born christmas eve, here at about 7 weeks old. Conservation efforts include having wardens thru the breeding season at the 3 nesting sites, taping off of breeding areas, trapping preditors that eat the eggs [that are laid on the beach], and to educate beachgoers. The two newest members of the Fairy Tern population flying in formation. Lisa has a blog about these birds with more photos and narrative.
