Wyoming, writing, music, animals, you know, the usual! And bars. Also, Wyoming cowboy football and basketball. And my beloved but sometimes aggravating Kansas City Chiefs.

Heroes
Ray Davies. Are you out there, Ray? Henry James, I guess in some ways you are, in some ways you aren't.
I ran away to Wyoming when I was 32. I've had a great time since then. I teach at the University of Wyoming and do lots of writing about Wyoming and the West as a freelancer. I play music with some good friends who can tolerate my singing, guitar playing, accordion, authoharp, and sleigh bell ringing.
I do some songwriting here & there but haven't done any official recording. Just a little cd I made mostly for my mother, called Notebook Songs. My music publisher is myself, under the name Yip Yap Music.
Another interest is co-hosting a radio program in Laramie called Speaking of Writing. It is Laramie's literary radio program. My immediate family consists of my husband, our dog, our cat, and our two turtles.
I've just come out with my first book, Jukeboxes & Jackalopes: A Wyoming Bar Journey. Thanks, Pronghorn Press, for publishing it.

Who I'd like to meet:
Here's a few things kind people have said about my book Jukeboxes & Jackalopes. I've already met them, and I wish you could, too!
“Combine equal parts anthropology, memoir and travelogue, stir, and you’ll have the refreshing draught of Jukeboxes and Jackalopes. Julianne Couch takes readers into friendly resorts where dead animal heads and Miss Makita calendars prevail. Cookie-cutter chains and fern bars have no place in rural Wyoming—and this book celebrates their absence. Jukeboxes and Jackalopes will delight readers who like to loaf off the beaten path and shows why Wyoming is still like no place on earth.”
- Kevin Holdsworth, author of Big Wonderful *********
“Every thirsty trip across Wyoming's expanses should be accompanied by this lovingly detailed account of the tiny communities, smaller bars and hugely fascinating denizens to be found on the less-traveled paths. Julianne Couch takes you by the hand and introduces you like a neighbor to each community watering hole. Whether an armchair traveler or adventurous tourist seeking something besides the tour-bus destinations, readers will discover a vanishing world far outside mainstream experience.”
- Jeffe Kennedy, author of Wyoming Trucks, True Love and the Weather Channel.*********
"Ever wonder what the inside of a bar looks like and what kind of people frequent that bar as you speed by in your vehicle? Would the people be friendly? Would they be interesting to talk to, and would they be interested in you? Well, Julianne Couch makes the stops for you, enters the bars, and talks with the people. It is a great way to tour Wyoming and learn about the people who live there. Julianne Couch writes with a humorous touch. She is a modern day Mark Twain, a keen observer and storyteller. I know the next time I travel through Wyoming I’ll take along a copy of Jukeboxes & Jackalopes so I’ll know where to stop for a cold one and learn more about the people who live in the small town’s of Wyoming."
From a review on Amazon.com by Bill Markley, author of Up the River with Lewis & Clark.
"I've read ... Jukeboxes and Jackalopes, which is a truly fun read, especially for friends of Wyoming, and fans of all that makes it unique, but also for all folks who appreciate Western culture. This book is a gem."

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
Dear Julianne, I am so sorry that Craig's journey ended tragically. I have been following the story since you told me about him. He sounds like a great man; may you and his other friends find comfort in the warm memories you have of him. Peace and blessings, Pam
