The Human Rights Watch in NY called on Singapore leaders to "end the practice of using defamation suits to stifle political opposition". Singapore’s Govt responded by saying "opposition politicians have the right to criticize the Govt but that does not entitle them to tell lies or defame".

Quite uniquely, only Singapore’s opposition leaders are fond of telling lies since we don’t hear much of other countries’ opposition leaders being sued. (Simple logic? But it's never uttered in the local press! Says much about our 'upright' system.)



Singapore's Law Minister says "Press can criticize, but Govt. expects right of reply." Point is, with insidious repression - does the Singapore press ever really dare to criticize the Govt.? The "right of reply" is completely superfluous.
