    Carolyn "la Dolce"'s Interests
General
Anything and everything, although I know that's not very helpful.

Very well, then. Theatre and film, since I'm a playwright, stage director and film producer.

Aikido. A little bird tells me someone has plans to cross pollinate his JKD with my aikido. Haha at the very least, that should allow for some fun adventures on the mat.

Politics, religion, or more specifically atheism where it comes into conflict with religion, history.

Physics and astronomy. Software engineering, although I'm a wee tad rusty, having been out of the industry for a bit. But back in the day, I was a wicked ass hacker. And with a little work, maybe I will be again someday.

Y'know, it would be easier to list what I'm NOT interested in... because I'm interested in pretty much anything and everything, like I said.

Testriffic Quiz Your Friends
Music

TO PLAY: Dvorak, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Kodaly (I'm a cellist, go figure) TO LISTEN: Mozart (especially the operas), Debussy, Josquin des Prez, just about any hard rock. Thing is, I love to dance, too, so... I'm easily amused.

My musical sphere is ever expanding. I've been living in a cultural freezer for about 20 years, so I'm open to pretty much anything. Right now, I've got everything from Mozart to Dvorak to Evanescence to Bon Jovi to William freakin' Shatner to Rob Zombie in my CD player, so anything goes.

Hey, don't knock the Shatner album, it rocks. Ben Folds produced it, and it's got Henry Rollins and the lead guitarist from King Crimson.

So... almost anything. Even Def Leppard hehe.

Country need not apply, although I admit a sneaking fondness for old country, like Johnny Cash. It's like oreo cookies. It's really bad, but you still kinda like it once in a while. Bad jazz, and by bad jazz, I mean most jazz, likewise need not apply.
Movies
Too many to name, but here are a few: Cyrano de Bergerac,
Singin' in the Rain,
Seven Samurai,
Real Genius,
Cleopatra,
Henry V,
Hair,
A Midwinter's Tale,
Disney's Beauty & the Beast,
Chicken Run,
Le Pacte des Loups,
various SouthPark episodes.
Lion in Winter -- the old one, not the new one.
The Agony & the Ecstasy.

My two favorite movies of this year so far:

300 Stranger than Fiction

I admit, I'm not a huge fan of Tarantino, mostly because I think he's a one-trick pony. But he has his trick, and it's not a bad one.
Television
Not much on TV now, but I loved Babylon 5,
Highlander,
old Star Trek
and MST 3K.
I've recently discovered Family Guy,
Drawn Together,
and belatedly, South Park... I've also discovered Firefly which, while not as grand of gesture as Babylon 5, has some of the best dialogue I've seen on television lately. 24 ROCKS, too. Gotta add House, awesome show. Hugh Laurie is now officially on my crush list. And predictably, he's a Brit... and married. C'est la vie.
Books
Too many to list, but here are a few:
A Canticle for Liebowitz,
Dream Park,
Odyssey,
Hunchback of Notre Dame,
Dracula Tape (and of course the original Dracula),
Ender's Game and the rest of the books in that series,
How the B-52 Cockroach Learned to Fly (excellent children's book)
and whatever I'm reading at the moment. I usually have about six different books that I'm reading concurrently. I have heard alternately that this is a sign of ADHD and that it means I'm an excellent manager. I suppose the two aren't mutually exclusive.
Heroes
Hmmm... Pablo Casals, Carlos Hathcock, Jason Cunningham, John Chapman, Vercingetorix, Boudicaea, and probably a million other people who just shut up and do the right thing without concern for glory or fame. There's an old apocryphal story about a crippled veteran of the Battle of Marathon going to the Olympic Games in Athens. The stadium was filled up, so there were no seats. The Athenians all talked about how someone should give up his seat for the old man, but no one did. But as the old man passed the Spartans on his way to the exit, without a word, they all stood to offer him their seats. The saying is that the Athenians SAY what is right, but the Spartans DO what is right.

About me:
NO, I'm not a cam whore, so if that's what you're after, move along, there's nothing to see here.

My Linguistic Profile:
45% General American English

25% Yankee

15% Dixie

5% Midwestern

5% Upper Midwestern

I had a voice file up here for a while, and people asked me where it went. So here's a L I N K to it.

Eridani is an online nick taken from the name Epsilon Eridani, the beautiful star that is in the background for my profile. She's not big like Betelgeuse, she's not showy like Cassiopeia A, but she sparkles in every part of the spectrum and still manages to have planets. An astronomical working mother, as it were. Gotta love that.

By now, you've noticed that I'm a total geek.

JOBS: Fiction writer/playwright, director (stage), producer (film), actor(stage/film). Was quite techie long ago (eng. supervisor), not as much now. Before that, I was a professional cellist. SELF: Paladin with a roguish twinkle in the eye.

Nicks:
Xia-siu bao -- (Usual online nick)
Eridani -- (My less usual online nick)

I'm the owner/moderator for the Atheists community in orkut, as well as the Atheists' Library. So by now you've probably guessed that I'm an atheist. At least I'd hope so. But I'm not evangelical about it or preachy. I just don't believe in god(s). My son once said that he considers himself a poly-atheist because there are so many gods he doesn't believe in. I'm down with that.

Politically, I'm libertarian (as opposed to authoritarian) -- and no, it's not about wanting to legalize drugs. It's about valuing freedom over perceived security. This means different things to different people. To me, it means that as long as what you're doing doesn't mess up what I'm doing, and vice versa, the government really should have no say in it. I'm pretty centrist, slightly leftish, on the liberal-conservative scale. Why do I register as slightly leftish? Because silly me, I think women are people with rights. Hah! How stupid is that? That, and I don't like entering into wars illegally. That said, I support the men and women who are serving in Iraq, as well as those fighting the legal war in Afghanistan. After all, it's not their fault their Commander in Chief is a sock puppet.

Please don't add me if you're just collecting people like trading cards. I'm so not into that.

But I don't bite. Much. So don't be afraid to talk to me hehe.

FAVORITE QUOTES

"Now tell me, gentlemen, if you have ever considered it, how much fewer are those that have been rewarded by war than those who have perished in it?"-- Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes

"L'amour est un feu qui brûle sans se voir;
c'est une blessure qui fait mal mais ne se ressent pas;
C'est un contentement mécontent;
C'est une douleur qui rend fou sans faire mal.
c'est un non vouloir plus que bien vouloir;
c'est marcher solitaire parmi des gens;
c'est ne jamais se contenter d'être content;
c'est prendre soin de ce qui se gagne dans ce qui se perd;
c'est vouloir être emprisonné par sa propre volonté;
c'est servir celui qui vainc, le vainqueur;
c'est se rendre auprès de ceux qui tuent la loyauté.
Mais quand causer peut votre faveur
dans les coeurs humains amitié,
si aussi contraire à lui-même est ce même amour?"

Luís Vaz de Camões

"When lenity and cruelty play for a kingdom, the gentler gamester is the soonest winner." -- Henry V, William Shakespeare

"Quand les riches se font la guerre, ce sont les pauvres qui meurent." -- Jean-Paul Sartre

"Welcome to my house! Enter freely. Go safely, and leave something of the happiness you bring!" --Dracula, Bram Stoker

"A house cannot be made habitable in a day. And after all, how few days go to make up a century..." --Dracula, Bram Stoker

"A fair face will wither; a full eye will wax hollow; but a good heart, Kate, is the sun and the moon; or rather the sun and not the moon; for it shines bright and never changes, but keeps his course truly. If thou would have such a one, take me; and take me, take a soldier; take a soldier, take a king. And what say'st thou then to my love? Speak, my fair, and fairly, I pray thee." -- Henry V, William Shakespeare

"Tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles." -- Candide, Voltaire

"Trois heures, c'est toujours trop tard ou trop tôt pour tout ce qu'on veut faire." --Jean-Paul Sartre

"It was good enough for Kali
Though embracing her is folly
She'd be quite an armful..golly!
And she's good enough for me!

Gimme that Old Time Religion
Gimme that Old Time Religion
Gimme that Old Time Religion
It's good enough for me!"
--Dream Park, Larry Niven & Steven Barnes

"I think there's a bit of the devil in everybody. There's a bit of a priest in everybody, too, but I enjoyed playing the devil more. He was more fun." -- Gabriel Byrne

To those who have wronged me, do wrong me or plan to wrong me, this is my favorite quote:

"Kneel not to me: The power that
I have on you is to spare you;
The malice towards you to forgive you: live,
And deal with others better." -- P. Leonatus, Cymbeline
Who I'd like to meet:
Everyone, eventually. :-D

This is what I wrote when someone asked in one of the groups, figured I might as well put it here, save a lot of guys a lot of time... Also, if you don't have the attention span to read my profile and find at least SOMETHING to say to me other than just "hi" then please, don't waste my time or yours. I'm not a blow-up doll.

Okay, I am SO NOT LOOKING FOR ANYONE AT THE MOMENT. I have a really awesome man in my life who surpasses even these impossible expectations:

VERY intelligent -- this to my mind isn't about the number of degrees -- degrees are just education. Intelligence is different.
High energy physically and mentally
Low maintenance
Articulate
Literate
Passionate
Engaged in his own life
Pleased that I have a life of MY own
Good looking a plus
In shape a plus
Very sexual

Doesn't have to share my political or religious beliefs but has to respect (not ignore but respect) them.

I want to be with someone who can bring something new to the table every day, share something with me from his world that I didn't know before and let me share my world with him, too. Someone who takes great joy in being alive even though he's not necessarily had an easy time of it. I'd want to be with someone who doesn't see me as a conquest or a trophy to hang on the wall or the annoyance to be tolerated but as the person he can't wait to share things with, the person he can't wait to call...

On a more practical level, he should be employed and financially solvent. Doesn't mean rich, just not drowning in debt that could drown us both. Kids, no problem. Ex wives and girlfriends (who aren't psychopaths) no problem. Big dogs, yes. Cats, eh, we'll talk. Bearded dragons or African Gray parrots? He's my dream date.

Age? Not a factor. Anything from 21 to 91, as long as he's truly "alive" and mature enough not to let MY age be a showstopper, either way. By the way, "too old to love but not too old to fuck" doesn't work for me either.

But I'm not PICKY, oh no. Did I mention that there's extra credit for being a blue-eyed renaissance man of Irish derivation named Mike? ;-)

More Than a Day
By Karl Fuchs

As Thanksgiving Day rolls around,
It brings up some facts, quite profound.
We may think that we're poor,
Feel like bums, insecure,
But in truth, our riches astound.

We have friends and family we love;
We have guidance from heaven above.
We have so much more
Than they sell in a store,
We're wealthy, when push comes to shove.

So add up your blessings, I say;
Make Thanksgiving last more than a day.
Enjoy what you've got;
Realize it's a lot,
And you'll make all your cares go away.
