| General | Are we the sum of what we do? Some g-rated things: I read, watch tv and movies. i like how reading and writing science fiction and fantasy can free the mind from mundane consensual reality (this is not crazy-talk). i paint and knit, i'm working on a fantasy novel (always), make paper and jewelry. i love to kayak, bicycle, hike, and play scrabble with my family. i'm interested in anthropology, the internet, and how the mind/brain works. i love my cats . . . oh, and i have thing about spiders. | | Music | the knife! silent shout. royksopp. north african trance, master musicians of jajouka, gnawan trance, amon tobin, talvin singh, stuff to dance to. radiohead, dierdre, massive attack. older and repeat favorites: philip glass (love his operas), kate bush, lisa gerrard, ekova, PJ HARVEY, radiohead, many many more. i also like movie soundtracks: soderbergh's solaris, michael nyman's the piano and carrington, philip glass's secret agent and candyman (and more of his), tous le matins du monde (jordie savall on viola da gamba = great). geez, i sound pretentious. i also like madonna, eurythmics, tom waits. etc. | | Movies | cocteau's beauty and the beast, bergman's fanny and alexander, del toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH, blade runner, kieslowski's the double life of veronique, excalibur, singin' in the rain, soderbergh's solaris, tarkovsky's films, wong kar wai's films, terry gilliam's films, tony gatlif's films (especially Exils), camille claudelle, spirited away, garden state, 13 going on 30, little miss sunshine, the fountain. i also like a good documentary. check out spout.com. | | Television | i'm a geek: battlestar galactica, firefly, the stargates, dresden files, xena, alias, buffy, angel, farscape, la femme nikita, doctor who, torchwood, star trek ost and tng. i used to love the old beauty and the beast with linda hamilton and ron pearlman. these days i also watch weeds, house, bones, medium, veronica mars, south park, and LOVED home movies (brendan small cartoon on adult swim). in anime, i like witch hunter robin and am just starting to watch trinity blood. what a trippy show! ~ and i believe that wonder showzen is the sickest, most subversive, radical mind blowing thing ever to air on television. wonder showzen is dead. long live wonder showzen. | | Books | fantasy and sci fi: Ursula LeGuin, Peter Beagle, Patricia McKillip, Paul Park, Dan Simmons. also like garth nix, j.k. rowling,some stephen donaldson etc etc. mainstream fiction: paul bowles: the sheltering sky and toni morrison's beloved. non-fiction: cows, pigs wars and witches, the book of the spider. poetry: Jorie Graham, Li-Young Lee, Seamus Heaney. recently read Widdershins by Charles de Lint and The Hollow Kingdom series by Claire Dunkle (great!), Beauty by Robin McKinley and Forever in Blue by Ann Brashares. currently reading the white tyger by paul park. About me:
40-something writer / artist / wife / mother / librarian. my mother taught me that if you want something, then make it yourself, so i make a lot of things. i keep a live journal blog for all my knitting stuff (divahag.livejournal.com). i believe in magic. latest kick: the magic acorn. i believe the body, mind and spirit are one magical thing; therefore, i love yoga, tai chi, qi gong: i'm also into ecstatic dance and tribal/gothic belly dance (rachel brice rocks). i hate crowds, love the small circle of friends i'm lucky to know, passionately love my husband, and my son is my great hope. favorite places: my attic bedroom, morningstar's "the mother lodge," the cottage we rent on lake superior, gaia with zoe.
