They Still Celebrate XIT Rodeo & Reunion in Dalhart. XIT Honors the XIT Ranch Cowboys. You might as well load up now and plan to spend the next week in Dalhart. The XIT Rodeo and Reunion is getting under way, with several days of events that showcase cowboy skills and the all-around good times of small town life. The rodeo and reunion was started in 1925 to honor the cowboys who worked at the famous ranch. The junior rodeo, which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lake Rita Blanca, and amateur team roping, which starts at 9 a.m. Sunday, headline the weekend's activities. Rodeo and reunion events continue into next week with three free feeds, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo events, art exhibits, a tractor show, fiddlers contest, rodeo and dance.
David Finkenbinder, who is responsible for rodeo events, is excited about this year's stock contractor because he believes the superior stock will draw the best riders. David Bailey Rodeo Co., of Fort Gibson, Okla., owns Lucky Strike, the 2005 Wrangler National Finals Bull of the Year, Finkenbinder said. The rough stock - bulls and bareback and saddle bronc horses - are very, very good, he said. "The main thing, the animals are very athletic, and the cowboys have been able to score very high on the stock," David said. The three nights of PRCA action are expected to draw around 20,000 people. The XIT Rodeo and Reunion lays claim to the world's largest barbecue. Junior Frische, president of the board of directors for the event, said he expects to serve 10,000 pounds of pit-cooked meat to more than 30,000 people on Aug. 4 . The free feed is dished out at Lake Rita Blanca. The beef will be accompanied by beans simmered up in the "bean barn," where four 200-gallon steamers worked their magic on the traditional barbecue side dish. Cooking the beef requires more than 24 hours preparation before it comes out of the ground and goes straight on the plate, Frische said. A free watermelon feed - 2,000 pounds of juicy red will be served - is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday and a free pork chop feed - 6,000 chops - will be conducted from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 4. All of these are at Lake Rita Blanca.
Preparing to feed that army starts a year ahead of time and requires a battalion of volunteers. The directors appreciate the volunteers who wrap meat, cut wire, stack wood, season the barbecue meat and dish it out, Frische said. Besides eatin' and ridin' and ropin', Dalhart guests can also enjoy some fiddlin' at a fiddlers contest.
Kristine Olsen, president of the Dalhart Area Chamber of Commerce, said the contest, which is set for noon Aug. 5 at Seventh Street Park, will have one more feature this year. "We are going to have a jam session after the fiddlers contest," she said. People are encouraged to bring guitars, mandolins, banjos - whatever they play - and join in, Olsen said. The fiddlers contest usually draws between 20 and 25 people. "We kinda wanted to add to it (the fiddlers contest), and we hadn't figured out what so we figured we'd try this," Olsen said. Saturday

About me: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is "XIT" and why is everything in town named after it? The XIT Ranch (pronounced as initials) was the largest ranch in the world in the 1880s. It contained over 3 million acres in ten Texas counties and ran 150,000 head of cattle. The land comprising the ranch was traded by the State of Texas to the Capital Syndicate of Chicago in exchange for building the state capital in Austin.
XIT Rodeo & Reunion - Held every year since 1925 to honor the cowboys who worked the ranch. Always the first Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of August. Ten to twenty thousand attend the Rodeo, World's Largest Free Barbecue, Parade and much more. Contact the Chamber for more information. Telephone 806-244-5646---------------------------------------
Just thought I would add my own summary to those that are new to the site. XIT Rodeo & Reunion is going into it's 71st year. We have been know across the country for the event we put on. We have a rodeo nightly (cowboys like Fred Whitfield, Trevor Brazile, Trevor Knowles, B.J. Schumacher, and Bubba Strait attend regularly)followed by a dance (recent artists include: Stoney Larue, Aaron Watson, Jason Bolland, Kyle Wyley, Cooder Graw, Reckless Kelly, Bleu Edmonson). We even feed ya for free. On Thursday we give you free watermelon from 4-6pm, Rodeo 7-9pm and then BYOB dance 9-12, then on Friday we have what is believed to be the World's largest porkchop feed 4-6pm, Rodeo 7-9pm, and dance 9pm-1am BYOB, and then Saturday is just filled starting with the parade at 10am, the fiddlers contest at the park, the tractor pull by the arena, the Mud Bogs, then we fill ya up with Free BBQ from 4-6pm, Rodeo 7-9ish, and then BYOB dance 9p,-1am. I have been told that in the past XIT was known as "The biggest party in Texas" and with attendance on the rise again it will be again. It amazes me that people all across the country know about XIT. Amazing tradition and history, so come be a part of that this year.
