The Liberty X story begins with the TV phenomenon, "Popstars," the first reality TV show to find musicians to be aired in the UK, following it's worldwide launch in Australia. Thousands upon thousands of hopefuls applied to become the lucky winners of a place in a pop band, whittling down those to a final talented ten. Five of those were chosen and became overnight popstar puppets, controlled by the TV channel and the associated record company. As with any competition, there are losers, and it just so happened that Kelli Young, Jessica Taylor, Kevin Simm, Tony Lundon and Michelle Heaton were the losers of "Popstars." Or so everyone thought...
Weeks after the show, having done press together, including many TV interviews, Jessica, Tony, Kevin, Michelle and Kelli met up to discuss the events that had since unfolded, having each been offered solo record contracts and instant celebrity status. They knew each other, and had formed bonds from the drawn-out "Popstars" experience, so decided to stick together. 'We decided to be positive about the whole "Popstars" experience and just thought, 'let's go for it,' because we were so strong together and all really got on. It seemed far more natural to stick together than go it alone', says Kelli, the youngest member of the group, on the five's decision to work together, and form a group of their own.
Rumours abounded the industry that the five were still working together, and contracts were thrusted at them, similar to those that had been given to the show's "winners," Hear'Say. However that was not what they wanted - as musicians they wanted control over their sound and wanted to write their own material. They got together a demo of six tracks, all self-penned, and set about finding themselves a record deal. 'From our first meeting I was completely wowed by their determination, optimism and refusal to give up. But it was when I heard their music that I knew they were going to be a huge success', said tycoon, Richard Branson, head of V2 Records. The five had first come to V2's attention after meeting Branson and he had been immediately impressed by their charisma and commitment. After Richard's first meeting with the still-unnamed group, V2 had followed their progress with interest and were keen to hear music, requesting demo tracks, which were duly provided.
When V2 heard the edgy pop/R&B sound with tremendous vocals and harmonies they knew that they had found their pop band. So confident were V2 in their ability and potential that they signed them for a six album deal, with the ability for either party to leave the contract unfulfilled should they choose to do so. The group then decided upon a name - "Liberty" - representative of the freedom they were being given by V2, having found a label that was willing to let them work and create their own songs and sound. Prior to signing with V2, Liberty already knew they wanted to create an edgy credible sound, and to that extent, had approached Public Demand Records after hearing a radio interview with the Artful Dodger during which they'd expressed interest in the group. Pete Devereux of the Artful Dodger and the Wideboys were asked to produce the debut Liberty single, "Thinking It Over." The single was released whilst the group were adding finishing touches to their debut album, and hit ..5 in the official UK top 40 singles chart. A second single, "Doin' It," r eached ..14 in the UK charts, at a very competitive time of year, and an album was planned, but postponed due to the Christmas rush, and a potential law-suit.
Despite receiving clearance to use the name, "Liberty," a jazz group who were also using the name Liberty claimed that the "new Liberty" were infringing on their name, and took them to court. The original Liberty won, and have since sunk back into obscurity, having only received press for their exploitation of Jessica, Michelle, Kelli, Kevin and Tony. All was not lost for the group, as V2 and "The Sun" arranged a competition for fans to choose a new name. An adapted version was chosen - Liberty X - the freedom of the original remained, whilst X added an edge, an "X factor" that the group possessed.
Back with a brand new single, brand new image, and some new tracks that had been recorded early in the year, Liberty X re-launched with "Just A Little," which stormed to the top of the UK singles charts, and the album, simply entitled "Thinking It Over" (it was originally titled "To Those Who Wait") followed, reaching ..3 in the UK Album Charts. They followed this with an amazing fourth single - a cover of Mantronix's "Got To Have Your Love," which was remixed by Curtis Mantronix himself, and their self-penned ballad, "Holding On For You." Both tracks hit the top 5 in the singles chart, with the former just missing out on the ..1 spot.
After a short break from the chart scene, whilst on a a major theatre tour, Liberty X returned versus Richard X, the esteemed electro DJ and producer, responsible for the Sugababes' ..1 "Freak Like Me." The track they worked on followed the same formula - an old 80's synth record ("Being Boiled" by the Human League") and a soul classic ("Ain't Nobody" by Chaka Khan). The collaboration reached ..3 in the UK chart, and was a major club success. The group took a small break, and recorded their second album, again writing most of it themselves. In October 2003, the second single from the album was released. an up-tempo R&B track entitled, "Jumpin'," which was co-written by Lucie Silvas (who later established a solo career as a female singer/songwriter), and had been performed by the group on their UK "Just A Little" tour. The track reached ..6 in the UK charts, and their second album, "Being Somebody," hit ..12 in its first week of release. A more mature effort than their debut, the album featured a balance of R&B beats against soulful ballads, which was applauded, but which didn't translate into the sales the group had hoped for. A second single was released in the early part of 2004, a mature ballad entitled "Everybody Cries." Unfortunately this missed the top 10, and due to overseas promotion, a planned 2004 tour was cancelled. V2 and Liberty X were forced to re-evaluate their working partnership, with V2 being blamed for the underwhelming performance of the album. Not to be dismayed, the group spent most of 2004 promoting abroad, and writing songs.
In 2005, the group returned with a track called "Fresh," a Kool and the Gang track, recorded as a cover version for a potential re-release of "Being Somebody," which never materialised. The track was featured on ITV 1's "Discomania," and also on a Kool and the Gang tribute CD, and was also released commercially in France and Germany. V2 chose not to release the single in the UK, and Tony suggested they launch a new album with "Song 4 Lovers," a track he had written, but after months of discussion, Liberty X left V2 records.
Having written material for their third album, the group set about finding a new contract, but at the same time, kept themselves in the public eye, with Kevin appearing on Channel 4's "The Games," where he attracted a whole new fanbase, and Michelle appearing on ITV 1's "Celebrity Wrestling," as well as keeping a column in "Hot Stars," a supplement of "OK" magazine. In June 2005, it emerged that Liberty X had signed to Unique Corp records, to be funded by Virgin Records, part of the EMI music group, the label that former boss Branson formerly owned. "Song 4 Lovers" was eventually released in September, despite constant name changes (Tony says, "they thought it would appeal to the yoof more if we called it 'Song For Loverz,' which then became 'Song 4 Loverz', and eventually we settled on 'Song 4 Lovers'"), and hit ..5 in the official UK top 40 singles chart, at a time when chart-wise, pop acts are few. The album, "X," the group's third album together, was released in October, featuring a blend of chart-friendly pop, with an edgy R&B feel, such as on the title track, "X," co-written by Johnny Douglas, and the eclectic cover of Stevie V's 90's classic, "Dirty Cash."
