Local rockers X Ray Hip return to the 400 Bar stage tonight for their first gig in almost a year. During that time away, the band adopted a new name (the Petty Demons) and a new rhythm section (Doug Youland of the Delilahs and Clay Swanson of the Widgets). They're playing a bunch of fresh material they plan to record for an album due out next year. Los Angeles singer/songwriter Michael Miller is also on the bill along with Eller/Lynch (who rarely plays out these days) and Fussy.--PIONEER PRESS, Ross Raihala

After he fell short of becoming a rock star a decade ago, Aaron Seymour stopped gigging for a long time and only started creeping back into action two years ago. Now, the former Delilahs singer has a pair of high-profile gigs over the next two weekends, starting with his new all-star band X-Ray Hip's "CD preview party" (meaning the discs aren't back from the manufacturer) Saturday at 7th Street Entry. A week later, the Delilahs play their first-ever reunion gig for the Finnegan's Summerfest outside the Cabooze. "It's not purely by coincidence," Seymour explained of the timing. "Since I started singing again [with X-Ray Hip], I've gotten my chops back and grown to love it again." The Hip's debut, "New American Lady," was produced by Semisonic's John Munson (who also worked with the Delilahs), and it's coming out on Rich Mattson's SMA Records. Tracks like the eeeevil-woman-baiting title track and the stormier "Bead Off All the Rain" have a great '60s-via-'80s classic sound à la the Smithereens and Hoodoo Gurus.--STAR TRIBUNE, Chris Reimenschneider

Those old enough to remember "120 Minutes" — way back when Kevin Seal hosted it — are likely to dig X Ray Hip, a kicky six-piece led by Aaron Seymour, whose last band, the Delilahs, split in 1997. Semisonic's John Munson produced their terrifically fun debut, which at times sounds like early R.E.M. minus the navel gazing.--PIONEER PRESS, Ross Raihala

X-Ray Hip’s New American Lady is the first album offering from former Delilah’s singer Aaron Seymour in a decade. This new rock and roll band lays the foundation for his lyrics about relationships and life.--RIFT MAGAZINE, Lewis Kulman

X Ray Hip aren’t likely to crack the radar of the blogosphere. For one thing, they’re just too old for Pitchfork to care, but they also play resolutely stripped-down garage rock whose point is clearly kicking out the jams, not impressing the hipsters. Their new disc, New American Lady on Rich Mattson’s SMA Records, was produced by John Munson of Semisonic and The Flops fame, and it represents singer Aaron Seymour’s return to the rock fold after a decade-plus long absence following the dissolution of the Delilahs back in 1997. On songs like "Skyscraper," the music bears some of the grind and punk ethic of Social Distortion, but mixed with bittersweet and yearning melodies that recall ’60s pop and garage acts. For fans of the Delilahs, it will be an instantly familiar sound, and the time off hasn’t diminished Seymour’s vocal chops one bit. Fans of real heartland rock would be advised to check out the CD release show for New American Lady at the 400 Bar this Saturday, March 22. The bill is rounded out by Dallas Orbiter, Rhinestone Diplomats, and Sarah Benck and the Robbers.--REVEILLE MAGAZINE, Steve McPherson
