The beginnings of an urban fairy tale: Susanne and Maren, daughters of a priest and a theologian but nevertheless down to earth, met about ten years ago in their beloved school choir, although they had seen each other years before at their piano teacher’s house. When Susanne had finished and Maren’s hour began, Susanne had to witness Maren being reprimanded every week for not having practised, which is why the former sits at the right-hand side of the piano now. About three years ago, they started meeting up regularly with a bottle of wine, covering songs by Radiohead, K’s Choice, R.E.M. and The Killers, and complaining about life. In April 2008, a little dissatisfied with the depressing nature of the songs they covered, Susanne wrote a happy song. It is called “Forth” and is inspired by Kate Nash, although this isn’t obvious anymore when played together. From then on Susanne couldn’t be stopped and the songs poured out of her heart, and Maren kept adding her ideas, chords and voice. In May 2008, at one of the infamous wine festivals in town, Susanne talked Paul into playing with them. He agreed and they met up in a fantastic rehearsal room. He asked his friend Simon to play the bass and the band was complete. From then on everything went incredibly quickly. The guys were very creative and contributed much to the songs. In August 2008, urban fairy had their first gig at the local park festival Vogel der Nacht, which was warmly received and led to a proper spot in this year’s programme.
The name urban fairy might be interpreted as a reflection of growing up in Bensheim, a small town in the middle of beautiful nature but only half an hour away from various big cities like Frankfurt or Heidelberg; a cross between a past full of forest adventures and folk songs and a closeness to modern life. Susanne and Maren decided on the name while sipping green fairy drinks called Berliner Weiße in a street café in Heidelberg.
Now in 2009, with new bassist Fabian and a new EP coming out, urban fairy are stumbling happily into the future. Many new songs are waiting to be rehearsed, recorded and performed.
