General

I didn't want to say anything but Ramo and I are no longer on good terms. :) So by default, I am now the proud sole proprietor of this wasted effort. "It's the Mitsy show now" as Ramo put it, so feel free to finally be yourselves on here. As for Ramo's acquaintances, you're more than welcome to stay aboard but I understand if you jump ship out of loyalty. We'll divvy up the mutual friends as outlined in the separation settlement. Alright, alright we're still best friends, best friends we've ever had BUT Ramo thinks myspace is gay so that is why he's out. Please do not write in or call. $NAKE EYE$ as an art super group is still available for quinceañeras and bodas. So contact me/us for any shows/jobs/house parties. You can now also see some of our junk via our Venomous Vomit Spitters blog and check out our video cuts here. And check the thumbnails below to view our murals/installations.

Television

All Day Everyday: City of Men, Uncle Daddy's Workbench, Freaks and Geeks, The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jeopardy, Dog Bites Man, SportsCenter, Ca$h Cab, Rob & Big, Chappelle's show, The Simpsons, My So-Called Life, Seinfeld, Quantum Leap, Conan, Adult Swim joints, Jem, Strangers with Candy, HBO Boxing, Project Runway, Spark*, Independent Lens, SIGNE CHANEL.

Recently for whatever reason: KID NATION is the most hilarious comedy on television (I don't care if the strike never ends), Extras, Deadliest Catch, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Ultimate Fighter, Bad Girls Club, Miss Rap Supreme, Everything on TLC that is like..."Its Not Easy Being a Wolf Boy" "Born with Two Heads" "Half Man, Full Life" "The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off" "The World's Tallest People" "Archie, The 84lb Baby" "My Skin Could Kill Me" "Face Eating Tumor" "Half Ton Man", "The Man Whose Arms Exploded", "Wild Child: The Story of Feral Children"...those are all quality. MTV's True Life episodes are top notch. True Life: I'm on Roids, True Life: I Have Gay Parents, True Life: I'm a Clubber, True Life: I have an Eating Disorder, True Life: I'm a Binge Drinker..TOO RICH. "Intervention" is my #1 I love the one with old girl (the nerdy Mexican) from "Stand and Deliver" getting set up by her co-star from said movie, to face her compulsive shopping and OCD. On that same episode was addicted gambler Gabe, hahahah. Yeah, that was pretty much my fav. episode. A close second, Christine, the power drinker. Shit on BRAVO where people prove they can sew, cook, cut coifs."Snoop Dogg's father HOOD" looks promising, and I want to catch "The Demonic Ape" also on Animal Planet. What don't I like? Something has to be on while I paint.

Books

Growing up I was force fed a lot of garbage and LIES, titles such as Benji and the Tornado, Puppies Need Someone to Love, The Get Along Gang and the Missing Caboose, as you can imagine I just ended up drawing all up in em. With time, my sophistication grew and I yearned for more complex authors, Beverly Cleary, whoever wrote the Babysitter's club and Sweet Valley High series, Judy Blume. Dude, what was up with Blume's Forever? That was straight up smut, hilarious. Lisa, Bright and Dark, taught me its okay to be a little crazy. I'm guilty of consuming Chicano reading lists, Chicano Chicanery, El Milagro and Song of the Hummingbird were fresh. But I'm also relevant cause I've picked up titles by Hornby and Sedaris or no? haha. Bendiceme, Ultima is probably the only book I've read all the way through in spanish but I like the biographies in the back of my Mom's Vanidades magazines those two are in spanish. Most of all I enjoy the layman's literature, magazines. Libro Vaquero, Semanal Pasional, Memin Pinguin, MIRA!, TV y Notas, Beautiful Decay, Clout, ESPN magazine, Mass Appeal, Elemental, Giant Robot, Alarm, Anthem and whatever other magazines I can take in for free at the bookstore or people's houses (preferably ones that haven't been in their bathrooms). Books with pictures, Books for reference.

The squib below appeared in the SF Weekly circular a few weeks back, it is probably the nicest thing ever written about me. Far nicer than anything I would say about myself or that anyone that REALLY knows me would endorse. I swear that Hiya Swanhuyser is not my nom de plume, she's legit. Thanks, greatest writer of all time for the props (short for properties). You know this will find its way onto the refrigerator.
Also a little known fact, I tied for Best Painter in last year's "Best of San Francisco" issue of the SF Weekly. It's right there in black and white, therefore it MUST be true. :) Check the write up.

At the end you'll find a little review/recommendation of a past group show I was in.

Its Not Fair Some artists get all the talent
By Hiya Swanhuyser

I'll say it quickly before I chicken out: Mitsy Ávila Ovalles is severely brilliant. Someone needs to give her a ton of money so she can keep painting, or we'll all lose. It's hard not to hate people this talented, but I'm doing my best. It just doesn't seem fair for her to have such an ethereally beautiful way with lonesome mariachis, bits of food wrapper, and owls, while I have nothing. She habitually produces images layered with glowing washes that drip over piecemeal figures (sometimes just feet, sometimes the head of Fernando Valenzuela). An infallible sense of composition grounds her irreverent takes on little things that might be sacred. Ruination glows from behind darkened faces. In short, her canvases are a joy to behold. Grrr. Ovalles' work shows in the exhibition "Mind Maps," along with that of seven other talented young artists, including Diana Sanchez, Hector Dio Mendoza, and Ana Fernandez.

Best Painter (Tie)
America Meredith and Mitsy Ávila Ovalles
There's no shortage of good painters in San Francisco, but two stand out this year: America Meredith and Mitsy Avila Ovalles. ... Ovalles' canvases drip with thin irony and thick varnish; they burst with love for slightly dorky Latino heroes and wonderment at the power of owls. They're gooey, sometimes alarming, and absurdist without being glib. Ovalles also makes videos, murals (as part of the Snake Eyes collective), and snow globes. Prolific, intelligent, and serious at least some of the time, these two women use their mastery of form and technique to make art that's both snarky and reverent. How San Francisco.

Sweet Guns
At "Pistolitas de Azúcar: Cultura, Pop, and Whimsy" Mitsy Ávila Ovalles lionizes Mexican and U.S. pop culture of the 1970s and ..80s. In an installation recreating parts of a girl's bedroom, she includes (among many, many other hilarious objects) a Monchichi doll and a collection of cassette tapes including one by defunct Mexican popsters Los Bukis. But it's Ovalles' paintings that truly astonish: In photos, her work looks like smart and gorgeous treatments of iconic figures like singer Juan Gabriel, but seeing it in real time is different. It looks even better. Scratched outlines hide treasures (look for the ephemeral emerald ring in one, galloping hooves in another) and gouged, burnt wooden pieces covered in hard gloss throw shadows and give off light in unexpected ways. The Date Farmers' sign art, Amanda Lopez's witty shoe photos, and the excellent work of six other artists also appear, as thoughtfully curated by Raquel De Anda. Date/Time: Daily from Fri., May 11 until Sat., June 30.

Press is cool and all but in an effort to capture a more accurate portrayal of myself :) here are some testimonials from two of my bestest friends ever (that know me in real time, not like only on this second life or whatever you want to call it) They're charming gentlemen.
