Well a typical spirit couldn't really do anything to you. The really angry, powerful ones can do things to an extent. What you really have to watch out for is demons. They can do pretty much whatever they want, including possession. But they're hard to come by, so no worries :D

Eh...I'm not one to say much about them. I personally think they do work. Most people say "Oh its just the other people using it that are pushing the planchette across the board" but if you have completely honest people doing it with you, you know they're not pushing it, and obviously you know you aren't either. Don't use one by yourself. One person does not have enough spiritual energy to control the planchette on their own. Its best for 2 or more people :p

Basically, we walk around and try to see if there is any paranormal
activity. We also do EVPs which is basically when you use a recording
device and start either asking the alleged ghost questions or just wait
silently, then you replay the recording and if a ghost responded at
all, you will either hear its voice or some sort of noise. (wow, that explanation was longer than I intended XD)
