Yam Cannon formed somewhere in the wintery nether-regions of early 2006 in the basement of Greg Hirsch. Joe Thielen and Greg, friends and office schlepmates, were both involved in other bands, experiencing intermittent joys and sadness, and decided to join forces. Because the names "The Originals" and "The New Originals" were both already taken, Greg and Joe decided that the name Yam Cannon would have to suffice.
While they were looking for a drummer in the local newspapers, Ro (Sarah Rohow, friend of Joe and Greg) thought Yam Cannon could use some extra umph in the rhythm section, and sat down at the keyboard during a practice. Immediately, Ro was a fulltime member of Yam Cannon. Ro brought her knitting skills to the keyboard in a way that no one ever thought possible.
Shortly after, the drummer advertisement money paid off, as a wayward Matt Hankey wandered into Greg's basement, arms loaded with drums. Hankey added the wonderful elements of his youthful smile and rhythmic vigor to Yam Cannon.
Unfortunately, Ro began a new leg on the journey of life when she accepted a position working in the Big City. Luckily, Dan Trelfa fell right onto Hankey's lap, and moved one seat over, straight onto the keyboard chair, facing straight forward. Dan is a former Singing Statesman, and his beautiful voice blows chills up the skirts of those within hearing distance.
Sometime later, our friend Matthew Probst, an amazing electric cello player, decided to give into our begging, and joins us whenever he can to add his unique blend of blues, funk, and rawkish noises to the blend of style.
All the while, we continue to collaboratively write songs that move your thoughts and stimulate your ass. Yam Cannon strives to give you aural pleasure for the full length of each and every evening.

Hello Everyone! I wanted to send everyone the lineup and details for the July 20th, Music for Peace event. The lineup will be as follows: 1-1:50 Naptime Nate 2:00-3:30 Magic Mama 3:30-4:00 Red Cedar Peace Initiative & Keith Bhutadaya 4:00-5:00 Meridene 5:10-6:10 Greg Gilbertson 6:20-7:20 Yam Cannon 7:30-8:30 The TopHatCats 8:45-9:00 Sunset Candlelight Vigil for Peace
Of course we will be flexible with the timing, with the exception of Magic Mama, who will be entertaining the children :) every band will have roughly an hour. Please let us know if the lineup is a problem for any of you and we will rework it if need be.
A concession stand will be available for food and drinks. The following will be provided: PA equipment, two monitors, four vocal mics with three boom stands & one straight stand, one instrument mic & stand, a 300 watt Ashdown bass amp, a 150 watt Marshall half stack guitar amp, a full Ludwig drum set with cymbals, 5 (extra) available inputs on the PA system for misc instruments, equipment (the Marshall and Ashdown will also be going through the PA) or extra mics. Each band is welcome to use the equipment available or bring their own and they can be switched out. However, we prefer not to switch out the PA equipment, speakers and mic stands. If a band has any mics that they prefer to use, switching that out is no problem. Please let us know if your band wants to switch out the drum set, so that we can plan for that.
We plan to provide each band with a PDF file of the flyer by email, which we will finalize and get to you by the middle of June for distribution to your fans. Please don't hesitate to request hard copies of the flyer, if you don't have a good option for printing. Just let us know how many you need. We have a rough draft of the flyer for the show done now. Please send along an email contact and we will send it right out to you. Any band that prefers a different photo on the flyer, send it along and we will switch

great show friday! you guys are off the wall. . . after throwing the golpher head around on fri, i was speaking with the panel and we agree you should change the band name to jam cannon. . .this came about after we realized dans name is jam telfa: )
hey dudes. wish we could have stuck around for your set last week. we had underragers that wanted to get the fuck out of there cuz they were stuck in one spot so whatever. like the tunes on the page. it would be killer if we could do a show together sometime. if you got a bill that needs a rock and roll band sometime in or after april, let us know. rock on.
HAHA ... imagine that! I came out to see my friends play at the Terminal(Nu Funk Mafia) and got to see you guys play before them ... keep up the good work! Peace & Love ~Angee~
I loved the dancing chicken! Thanks for a fantastic evening! You guys sound really great. I would like to get a shirt this week if possible! small or medium if possible!
My neighbors had a yam cannon when I was a wee lad. My cat was accidentally killed with that very same cannon, resulting in an adulthood of expensive therapy sessions and acai-fueled rages. And now you mock me?
I am feeling energy! I am happier than I remember myself being for quite a while. I have a scan on Thursday so send me some good vibes! I think it will be good though.
I'm sure that there's been some transitioning since aquiring new members, how are you guys settling into that?
You seemed to be on top of your game at the benefit. I liked!
