“África? É a minha mãe…”
Era uma vez um minhoto que veio a Lisboa e se fascinou pelos barcos que no cais partiam para África.
Após ter cumprido o serviço militar, antes da Guerra do Ultramar, pediu emprego a bordo de um navio que partiria para Luanda. Sendo este um aventureiro multifacetado, rapidamente foi contratado, partindo assim para a grande aventura.
Em Angola não tardou a perceber que ali seria o início do “resto da sua vida”. Conheceu uma mulher Africana, com quem casou e teve filhos.
Um deles, Fernando Araújo, viveu em Luanda até aos 4 anos de idade. Com a Guerra do Ultramar e a Revolução Portuguesa em 25 de Abril de 1974, a maior parte dos portugueses que viviam nas colónias regressaram a Portugal, tendo em conta a instabilidade de vida nesse momento de crise.
Esta família foi uma delas. Instalaram-se nos subúrbios de Lisboa e ali recomeçaram mais uma vez “o resto das suas vidas”.
“África é a minha Mãe” é a expressão mais fluente de Fernando Araújo (YAMI), quando questionado acerca do seu país de origem. Isto porque a senhora Maria Augusta, uma Africana nascida numa roça de café no interior de Angola, fez questão de transmitir aos filhos toda a magia da sua terra natal, toda a riqueza e toda a paixão que ela mesma sentia e sente acerca desta terra onde nasceu e cresceu, num tempo de paz e de felicidade.
Esta não é de modo nenhum uma história única, ou de uma única família. É a história de milhares de famílias, que viajaram para Portugal em virtude da guerra e da queda de uma terra mágica como esta e como outras no continente Africano. E que tentaram sempre transmitir aos filhos uma mensagem de paz e de esperança, para que pudessem crescer como boas pessoas, sem revolta e sem mágoas. Fazendo-os acreditar na terra que os teria visto crescer.
Fernando Araújo (YAMI) não voltou a Angola depois dos seus 4 anos de idade. Não conhece o país onde nasceu, como ele é agora. Mas conhece uma África ou uma Angola descrita e revelada pela mãe, que nela nasceu e cresceu como quem nasce e cresce num canto do paraíso.
E, por mais estranho que pareça, neste disco tudo isso se reflecte, como se ele próprio lá tivesse crescido, num outro tempo. No tempo das histórias contadas pela senhora que fez questão de lhe ensinar minuciosamente o seu dialecto (kimbundu), assim como de fazer crescer-lhe na alma as suas mais verdadeiras raízes.
“Eles estão a rir” é o significado do tema que dá o nome ao primeiro disco de YAMI. E que no fundo é o seu projecto de vida como músico, intérprete e compositor. Contando e sonhando as boas histórias de um país bom, sem esquecer todas as suas realidades presentes, como é óbvio, mas acima de tudo aquelas que retratam um passado que ainda voltará a ser futuro. Que a pele do som é mestiça…

Vêm de sul e são transmarinas, as raízes. Talvez por isso, não há som nem verso nem panorâmica que não se tropicalize.
Irredutivelmente diversas, fincam-se nas figuras rítmicas panafricanas, entre formas tradicionais e inovações crioulas — quer nas das músicas de dança das cidades de África, como semba, coladera e morna, quer nas das músicas da diáspora africana, como funk, reggae e rumba — e germinam nas criações musicais de YAMI outra e outra e outra coisa.
O canto, adestrado pelo batuque do coração, mistura vocábulos em kimbundu, crioulo cabo-verdiano e português, em acento e ritmo moreno, numa convizinhança estreita, antiga, que liga um idioma ao outro, um país ao outro.
Se de olhos bem fechados — como se aconselha a escuta —, experimenta-se sem distância a canícula dos lábios que cantam e riem; o ébano dos corpos dançantes que, ora juntos ora separados, alisam capins e enxotam formigas, e o aroma dos cajueiros floridos e das mangueiras em fruto, subindo e descendo a espiral do som que torna viagem do hemisfério da alma.
Aloelela* é, no mesmo passo, desejo e celebração, corporalidade e espiritualidade. Em síntese, uma afro-lusofolia tão contagiante como o riso.

"Africa? It’s my mother"
Once upon a time there was a “minhoto” (from North of Portugal) that came to Lisbon and got fascinated by the ships he saw in the wharf leaving for Africa.
After accomplishing the military service, before the Portuguese Colonial War, he asked for a job on board of a ship that would leave for Luanda. Being a skilful adventurer, he was quickly hired, leaving for his own great adventure.
In Angola he soon realized he was supposed to live there the "rest of his life." He met an African woman, with whom he married and had children.
One of them, Fernando Araújo, lived in Luanda till his 4 years old. With the Portuguese Colonial War and the Portuguese Revolution on 25th April 1974, most of the Portuguese that lived in the colonies returned to Portugal.
This family belonged was one of them. They settled in the suburbs of Lisbon and there they started "the rest of their lives" once again.
"Africa is my Mother" is Fernando Araújo's (YAMI), most fluent expression when questioned about his country of origin. Because of Maria Augusta, a born African in a coffee farm deep inside Angola, who insisted on passing to her children the whole magic of her birthplace, the
whole wealth and the whole passion that she felt and goes on feeling about this land where she was born and where she grew, in a time of peace and happiness.
This is not, in way any, a unique story, or the story of a single family. It is the story of thousands of families, which traveled to Portugal because of the war and of the fall of a magic land, as so many others in the African continent. But she never failed to transmit to her children a message of peace and hope, so that they could grow as good people, without revelry and without sorrows. Making them believe in the land that would have seen them grow.
Fernando Araújo (YAMI) didn't return to Angola after his 4 years old. He doesn't know the country where he was born or the country nowadays. But he knows an Africa and an Angola revealed by his mother, born and grown there as if in a corner of Paradise.
And, no matter how strange it seems, in this record all this is reflected, as if he had grown there himself, in another time. In the time of the so told stories from the woman who insisted thoroughly on teaching him her dialect (kimbundu), at the same time she planted deep in his soul his true roots.
"They are laughing" is the meaning of the theme that gives name to this first record of YAMI. And it is also his life’s project as a musician, interpreter and composer. Telling and dreaming the good stories of a good country, without forgetting all present realities, but above all those which tell a past that will be future once again.

THAT THE SKIN OF SOUND IS MESTIZO

They come from south and are transmarine, the roots. Maybe for that, there is neither sound or rhyme nor panoramic that does not tropicalize.
Irreducibly diverse, they stand upon pan-African rhythmic figures, between traditional forms and Creole innovations – either in dancing music from Africa’s cities, such as semba, coladera and morna, either in music from African’s Diaspora, such as funk, reggae and rumba – and in Yami’s music creations germinate one and the other thing.
The chant, trained by the heart beat, mixes Kimbundu, Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese vocabulary in a dark’s accent and rhythm, in a narrow, ancient, neighbourhood, connecting each idiom to the other, each country to the other.
If, with the eyes wide shut – as listening is advised –, one experiences without distance the heath from the lips that sing and laugh; the ebony from the dancing bodies that, either close or apart, smooth the grass and shoo the ants; and the scent of blossom acajou trees and the fruitfully mango trees, climbing and descending the spiral of sound that returns voyage from the hemisphere of soul.
Aloelela∗ is, at a time, desire and celebration, corporality and spirituality. In sum, an African-lusofoolishness, as contagious as laugh.
