Yamit Mamo Biography
Yamit Mamo is one of the shining stars of London’s music scene- known to audiences across the capital for her powerful vocals and sensitive acoustic soul. At a young age Yamit lived in Israel’s Negev desert, before moving back to London where she spent her most formative years. During this time Yamit sought solace in music- performing from the age of 11 and writing her first song at 14. Her early influences included Ella Fitzgerald and Freddie Mercury. Prior to studying Popular Music and Recording at the University of Salford, Yamit returned to Israel- spending a year connecting to her roots whilst being inspired by the diversity and ethnicity of Israeli music. It was at university that Yamit won a songwriting competition sponsored by Universal- culminating in a performance for many hundreds of admirers in Amsterdam.
Following university, Yamit moved back to London to pursue a career in music and spent most evenings playing London’s open mic scene building up her fanbase whilst continually writing new material. Yamit sings alongside various combinations of musicians, bringing variety and character to her performances. 2006 was packed with highlights in a promising start to Yamit’s career as a powerful performer and talented writer. These highlights include the making of a documentary about Yamit’s impact on London’s flourishing music scene, directed by Sophia Garrido of the BBC. Yamit has also performed in some of London’s most prestigious venues for unsigned musicians, including The Bedford and The Regal Rooms. She performed in the opening of the BBC Proms season- singing to massive crowds in London’s Trafalgar Square in the summer of 2006.
Shortly afterwards, a gig at the Secret Garden Party festival also received rave reviews for a performance standing out for it’s unique combination of intricacy and stirring vocal power. Yamit has recently achieved notable success in the world of acoustic music- she was crowned ‘The Big Voice’ in a National competition in November and since the launch of her long-awaited EP in February 2007 has wowed crowds at Glastonbury Festival and The Jazz Café. She is currently writing her first album alongside some of the finest writers in the UK, including Pete Martin, Peter-John Vetesse, Judie Tzuke and Anna Krantz. The next few months will see Yamit complete her debut album- which is sure to stun those who hear it through the sheer magnitude of her voice delivering a series of sumptuously written tracks. In September Yamit performed at the O2 centre formally known as the Millenium Dome, and the international release of the movie ‘Death at a Funeral’ took place recently, on which Yamit sings the title track. Excitingly, Yamit will sing worldwide on television screens in an appearance on the Dr. Who Christmas special in the UK and is also featured on the Dr Who series 3 album. Watch this space!!!
