Yampapaya is a multiethnic group made up of artists from different cultures such as Senegal, USA, Italy, Angola and Cuba.The group is founded on originality, energy with its public and a message.Yampapaya tribe have developed a particular style of their own influenced by reggae, funk, rock, soukous and rumba from the congo, creating a new music based on grooves and melodies from central africa.Yampapaya tribes live performance capture the energy of the public with rhythms and dance that are to contagious to keep still to.We believe that music has no frontiers and can promote peace and love among peoples. Yampapaya's roots began when songwriter/guitarist David James Hoffman moved to China. In Beijing university he formed a multiracial group with musicians from the Orient, Europe, Africa and America. Known as the Beijing Underground. The band achieved fame during tours organized by Deng Xiaoping's son.
David moved to a multiethnic style focusing on Africa with lyrics in English, Lingala and Swahili and was defined by the International Herald Tribune as a "musical melting pot, full of energy, melting together harmonies and rythms of different continents"
In Hong Kong continued his "musical laboratory" working with "Afrozilia" before going on to form the group which became known as Yampapaya.
David moved back to the USA touring North America from LA to the Rocky Mountains with musicians from Africa, Cuba & South America before going to Rome, Italy were the band is curently based.
Yampapaya tribe è un gruppo multietnico nato dalla collaborazione di artisti provenienti da paesi quali Italia, Cuba, USA, Senegal e Angola.
Gli elementi su cui punta il gruppo sono l'originalità, il coinvolgimento e il messaggio.
Il gruppo ha sviluppato uno stile particolare, ispirandosi al reggae, funk, rock, al soukous e rumba congolese, per creare una musica nuova, particolarmente attenta alle sonorità centroafricane. Ciò che ne emerge è un'energia incontenibile, capace di coinvolgere il suo pubblico nell'ascolto e nel ballo.
Inoltre crediamo che la musica non abbia frontiere e sia il mezzo più diretto per comunicare messaggi a livello internazionale come quelli di pace, amore e integrazione tra i popoli.Testi in Inglese, Italiano, Portoghese, Lingala e Swaili, chitarre africane, percussioni, insomma una musica in cui il ballo diventa una parte immancabile.
Il soukous è uno degli stili più sensuali dell'Africa centrale, e proprio perché non molto conosciuto in Italia, Yampapaya ci tiene molto a diffonderlo.
Yampapaya tribe può esibirsi in formazione da quattro a sedici elementi.
Il gruppo ha origine quando David james Hoffman si trasferisce in Cina. Nei corridoi dell'Università di Pechino forma un gruppo multietnico con musicisti orientali, occidentali e africani conosciuto come "Bejing Underground". La formazione ottiene un grande successo durante la tournèe organizzata con l'Ente per lo Sviluppo della Culture e dell'Arte e la Società Filarmonica Centrale Cinese. Dopo questa esperienza David si orienta su uno stile musicale propriamente multietnico, un insieme di ritmi diversi.
