September Of 1982.
| In a small town in Queens N.Y., The Tonns family, a lower-middle class family gave birth to a child they named Russell William, after his father and grandfather. Later to be known better as “Wes Studii”, Russell’s small town of College Point was not your average white neighborhood. It was riddled with gangs, drunks, drug addicts and graffiti crews, as many New York City neighborhoods were through out the 80’s and 90‘s.
Knowing what was possible his parents, who struggled with drug addiction themselves, enrolled Russell in as many after school and sports programs as possible. Russell excelled in just about all sports, but really had a passion for soccer and baseball. It was there, the player’s parents gave him the name “Hustle Russell”, for the unmatched amount of effort he put forth towards the game’s he played. This “hustle” has definitely carried over into his music!
Since a young child, Russell was always intrigued by music, having a close cousin in a popular underground hardcore rock band named “Born”. Although influenced by his cousins music, he always had a certain interest for the up and coming hip-hop scene. His mother Lisa, was some what clueless yet amazed as her son just kept trying to spin on his head and back around the living room. She asked the 8 year old what he was doing and he simply replied “breaking”. Later that same year Russell entered a school talent show, break dancing to Rob Base and Dj Easy Roc’s “It Takes Two”. Needless to say, it was a shock to the entire faculty and attending students.
The next year at 9, he entered a lip synching contest for young children at the local park. It was his first contest and his first true performance. He brought the same “Hustle Russell” attitude he had on the baseball and soccer field to the contest. Performing the Bart Simpson rap song, he took second place, behind an adorable 7 year old girl performing The Beatles “When I’m 64“. None the less, the experience was an eye opener to the young child.
Things were rapidly changing around Russell, and he was growing up fast. He soon moved into his grandmothers house. The same year they opened 27th park around the corner from his grandmothers house, which was now his own. It immediately became the hot spot for neighborhood teenagers to hang out. They were smoking weed, drinking, doing graffiti, rapping and break dancing among other things. Never a shy kid, Russell was quick to ask questions about and explore anything he took interest in. Like most children and teenagers, he took interest in what the older “cool” kids were doing. He soon became completely immerged into the hip hop culture. He started break dancing on a regular basis and doing graffiti constantly. When he started writing his tag “Wes” everywhere, it came under notice of the local graffiti crew “D.W.S.” (Down With Style). When they found out that such a young kid was causing such trouble, they quickly took him in as one of there own, admiring his heart and what others have called “hustle”. It was in 27th park Russell would soon meet Alien Ness. Alien Ness, a local College Point resident and member of the world famous “Rock Steady Crew”, would also come to admire Wes’ drive and passion for hip-hop.
As well as now going to a junior high school down the block from Pomonok projects, Alien Ness started bringing the young white boy to predominately black neighborhoods like The Bronx, the lower east side of Manhattan, Brownsville, Queensbridge to name a few. Introducing him to such breakers as K-Mel, Fever Ones, Crazy Legs, The Late, Great Frosty Freeze (rip),as well as many others. Time was passing fast. Alien Ness went on tour in Europe, the park was still the same. Russell kept on with his passions, now entering high school. He was already heavy into smoking weed and his relationship at home with his parents was teetering. It was in Robert F Wagner High School that he would really be exposed to the rapping aspect of hip-hop. Once again being taken in by the older kids, he immediately started cutting school to smoke weed and hang out friends he made in the school from south side Jamaica. Everyday they would meet up, smoke weed, and rap. Russell was still quiet, waiting and observing. Soaking it all in, amazed by the power of words and how you could play with phrases to be clever. It was only months before Russell was thrown out of school. The rest….. Is HISTORY!
