Our foremother, Sarah Imeinu, Sarah our mother. Her inner beauty of modesty (Hebrew: tsniut), her gentle and quiet spirit, was of great worth in G-d’s sight.
There is a strong source in the midrash which demonstrates how the entire "Woman of Valor" was originally composed by Abraham as a eulogy for Sarah, his wife. It is recorded in the Torah that our mother, Sarah, was one of the most beautiful women that ever lived. She was also an unprecedented spiritual luminary, The rabbis say Sarah was also called "Iscah" because she saw "with the holy spirit," which is to say that she had prophetic vision. Sarah was a spiritual leader along with Abraham: when they left Haran, they took with them "all the persons that they had acquired…." Tradition understands that Sarah and Abraham converted the people in their community to monotheism – Sarah taught the women and Abraham the men. She brought to the world a revolutionary way of life and taught countless women of her generation about faith in one G-d.
Sarah was a woman who desired a child and did everything she could to protect that child. Her role as mother became her identity. Sarah, the righteous mother of Israel, still lives because her example continues to inspire acts of goodness among her descendants.
