About me: Yarm Cricket Club was founded in 1814 and played its first game in that year against Stockton CC. This game attracted more than 2,000 spectators which Yarm won.
Harry Jobling, who was for 25 years the town's coorespondent for local newspapers, recalls that his father Tom played for Yarm on a pitch in the grounds of Kirklevington Hall, off Thirsk Road.
Later the Club moved to Willey Flatts, then to the present Leven Road Ground. ''I can remember travelling to away matches in an open horse-drawn brake bellonging to 'Cabby' Raper'' said Harry.
From the re-forming of the Club in the 1920's until 1975 there was always a Jobling on the commitee. ''My father was the first life member,'' Harry said. ''I followed him as a life member in 1975 after being on the committee almost 30 years.
In 1926 the Yarm Sports Ground Trust was set up by J Clapham, when he and his brother Harvey bought and set out the Leven Road Ground as a cricket field.
Yarm joined the NYSD (North Yorkshire & South Durham) league in 1932 and played in the B division ever since, except for 1940-42 when it played in the A division. The Club gained its first championship in 1933.
The first player to score 100 was Ossy Atkinson in 1934. On the 1st June 1935, there was a record breaking match in which two yarm batsmen scored centuries against preston: GW Hird (116), T Wycherley (107).
The Club has grown from these humble beginnings to now field 4 senior teams still in the NYSD league. Restructuring of the NYSD into divisions 1-5, instead of A-C in 1999 has meant the 1st XI play in the highly competitive Division 1.
The Club now plays a significant part in the local community, players are now coached from an early age with Junior teams participating from age 10 upwards.
YCC's famous members:
Mr Herbert Trenholm M.B.E.
It is remarkable to those who knew him that in 1988, that Mr Herbert Trenholm M.B.E. passed away. He played cricket for Stockton and Yarm and was also a Football League referee. More remarkably he held the office of NYSD League Secretary for an uninterrupted forty-eight years between 1938 and 1987. The second World War obviously made cricket playing difficult, but Herbert's penchant for letters was never better illustrated than at this time. He wrote several appealing against the ban on hose pipes at cricket grounds, the reduction in petrol allowances and even contacted every Member of Parliament pointing out the difficulties in buying 'cricket tackle' and imploring them to contact the Board of Trade. Another letter found its way to the Football Association protesting against extending the Soccer Season and thus affecting the 'gates' in local cricket. (Source; MCC looking back 2003)
